I am currently playing a game where I can actually build the Iron Works, it only took 2 years to finally get a game where it was an option. My question is, should I build it? I read somewhere that the pollution problems are terrible with it. Is the pollution worth the price of the production boost?

Yes, definitley worth it. In those cities around the Iron works city, just make workers. And once you get mass transit and stuff, it is an awesome small wonder.

Depending on the location it might also be worth moving your capital to the city with Iron Works, or building FP in the same city to reduce the corruption. It is very  having to build Iron Works in a city with huge corruption.

If the city has huge corruption, usually you wouldnt want to build it their because it would take to long to build wouldnt it? Unless you use a leader...

The city is very near to my capital. I think maybe right next to it, but I am at work and can not remember for sure. It is very close though because I can build Iron Works in 20 turns.

I am currently in a position to seize an Ironworks-capable city. The Romans possess a large island all to themselves, and when scouting the terrain I noticed that their land allows for the creation of a city with Coal and Iron. I'm planning a massive invasion of the island, and once I have it I will build the FP either in the Ironworks city or very nearby. This will be the first time that I have ever been able to build the Ironworks. Good times. :)

Then you should definately build it! The benifits (huge amount of extra production, and some culture) outweigh the drawback (more pollution) quite a lot. Just build a few extra workers and keep 'em close by for pollution control...

Having Iron Works in a soldid production city will make a game. The 2 times I was able to get Iron Work in a good city, I was able to build 3 out of 4 the rest of the wonders in that city with using a leader. The production capasity is just insane. If it was not for the limited number of times you can actually build Iron Works, I would say it is too powerful.

As far as invading a civ for the sole reason of being able to build Iron Work, I had never thought of that. I will have to try it thouhg. Iron Works is worth the extra trouble.

Iron Works produces zero polution :), but it is a small wonder, so each civ can only have one of them :(. build it in your city that produces the most shields.

Of course I'd invade to get a potential ironworks city. Not only is that small wonder great, but you also control another source of iron and coal. I've declared war for less... I usually can't get IW into a noncorrupt city, but the one time I have.. it helped me get every wonder afterwards.

You need the city you are building it in to have both coal and iron actuly in the city radius not sure about needing them to be actuly worked.

Occasionally (but not always) it is worth moving your capital to a city capable of building iron works (or at least close to it). It is a very good small wonder as long as corruption is not too bad.

Well, I didn't mean that I was invading for the sole purpose of getting the Ironworks. I'm just bored, in control of the game, and looking for a reason to roll over the Romans.

I don't like to move my palace around a lot, so depending on where the Iron works turns up, I just pretend that it is my 'third capital' that doesn't have influence. Its definatley a must-build.

In GOTM 17 I captured not one, but two iron-works-capable cities from the AI. Either would have been first-ring and very powerful for the civ that started out with it. Both were uselessly corrupt for me (and I had no interest in moving my palace), but at least the AI didn't get to use them!

If youbuild both factory and a power plant in the city with Iron Works, you can often achieve production of over 100 shields per turn, enabling you to build a tank every turn....

The IW does produce pollution. You usually do not get a choice of where to build, or most times even IF.
The game just finished, I built it in Paris, a captured city, with 3 shields lost to corruption.... out of 55 natural shields.... plus Nuclear, plus factory plus manufacturing plant == total output 217 shields per turn. I built EVERY wonder in that city after IW. Cure for Cancer took 6 turns...:D

Iron Works produces as much pollution as a factory and coal plant combined (4 evil traingles), but is my favorite wonder [I'm a big fan of factories in real life, despite being 'environment first':crazyeye:]

I have built ironworks in a city where the source of coal was not roaded, so you only need them within the city radius, not necessary to be using the coal and iron
