Ironic Starts

Hi,

The start I was given in my latest game was particularly ironic. I am playing through each leader from last to first. This game, it was Shaka, Large continents.

After scouting around, I found that I was isolated on my own landmass. I had planned on rushing all members of what I thought would be a large continent. Doh!

Really ironic. What ironic starts have you had?

Exact same thing happened to me w/ attilla
Planned on clearing out my continent with an early domination rush

Lo and behold, alone on my continent w/ 3 CS

I was china in a continents map.
started in same island as mongolia.
6 other enemies were squashed on another continent

Venice withouth any city states nearby

you usally want a puppet so you can move food to you're capital in the early game know i have to wait until astronomy

Nah, Venice with a great NW like six squares away. :/

Honestly I've always considered myself a "builder" type player, but I've come to realize I do not enjoy being Venice at all.

I had Venice in the middle of a continent on an inland sea with no way to get out and only 1 city state on my continent... I almost wanted to try and play it, but was just so frustrated I had to quit!

I've had that once while playing dido. I started a continent map standard size

I started next to a huge lake at the continent i settled my first 3 cities hwen i realise my harbors don't work because it aren't ocean's

i've had once played arabia, got floodplains start with 2 incense, first 2 cs is religious, got pantheon at turn 8 or 9, took the incense and wine pant.
Just to find that there are 2 incense and one wine worldwide, with that wine is in a CS border.

This pisses me off no end: Netherlands without any marsh. WTH!?

If you compare to Brazil who will almost always have a quarter of the first city area with jungle, I still feel a bit jilted when I am Netherlands and get ONE marsh. Up yours, tile allocation equation!

Can't think of much worse than isolated start on my own continent with no city states as greece, which happened once.

A land-locked Polynesia on a Continents game, possibly very frustrating if you started with the intention of exploring the other continent super quick and pumping out the statues for the Culture. There's also if you start with the Inca in a flat plains area with no hills around.

Playing Spain: the only nw on my continent is mt. Sinai in the middle of an arid, hillless, waterless desert.

Playing Boudicca I get two faith ruins. Playing as Theodora I get map information and barb camps.

Starting in the middle of a huge jungle with 1 citrus and 2 bananas as England. Literally not a single empty tile in sight.

Similar to the OP's Shaka start, I was Attila and after a few turns of exploration I was the only one on my continent, bar 3 city states. Didn't stop me from gibbing them with my Warrior-Battering Ram. :satan:

I played as India on an Earth map and I started in North America, I found that pretty ironic :p

Playing as Morocco, restarted one game 18 TIMES and got a total of 5, count 'em, 5 Desert Starts. Three of those had enough desert for exactly one city, the other two had no other civilizations or CS within 20 tiles, and were inland.

In short, with a civilization whose UU, UA and UI are al weighted towards desert location and trade, I couldn't get either one. I am convinced by that and other experiences that the Starting Position allocation algorithm is seriously defective.

Another, more 'normal' start, was playing as India, intending to try a Cultural game, and my nearest neighbors were Shaka, Montezuma, and Attila. Needless to say, Cultural emphasis went out the window in favor of Defend Until They All Get Tired And Go Beat On Someone Else...

When playing as the Netherlands I don't really care about Marsh at the starting location (although it is always nice). Polders only become available mid-game and only get really good a bit later. What is important is Marsh near other city sites. Hardly anyone settles near Marsh and definitely no one expands to those tiles, so you can drop a city there later, buy those Marshes (you don't expand culturally to them either) and you have a resource quality tile.

Just the fact that when I'm not playing as The Netherlands, and I see a giant marshfield

Tried two games with England and Portugal, start inland...

I was just testing one mod using In Game Editor, I didn't care about my civ, chosen Shoshone and clicked on random map, random opponent. Map - great plains - you know, only plains and arid land, almost not a single sea tile and definitely not ocean :p, size: smallest possible. My random AI opponent...

...Polynesia

That was perfect.

How did you get Great Plains from a Random map? I thought it would only give you Continents, Pangaea, Archipelago, or Fractal? (That's one of my biggest complaints about Random maps - it doesn't give enough options) Or does it have to do with using the IGE?
