Is AI unable to wipe out an entire civ?

The best AI elimination I've seen is in a Pangea map where Monty got wiped off the map. It seems that he managed to piss off every single other AI civ. Every single one of them went to war with him at some point and slowly nibbled away at his cities until finally Hatty put him out of his misery by declaring war on him to capture his only remaining city. It was fun to watch.

I remember in the earlier Civ games, I used to try to rush to be the first to destory other civilizations before the AI beat me to it.

I have a feeling one of the civs in my last game would've been destroyed by another AI but I decided it was a great chance to steal some of the cities up for grabs, and finished them off...
