In response to the OP, no, I don't consider chess a spectator sport but will happily whomp anyone here except @Narz any time you are up for it.

Where do you even watch that?

On Chess.com.

Isn't Civilization (any iteration), any day of the week, wildly superior to Chess? ;)

Not even close. Civ is glorified solitaire. Chess is high stakes poker.

I thought AI was the world champion of chess? Kind of like Civ6 AI. Okay, maybe not.

11 draws in a row is pretty incredible. Carlsen seems to be out-prepared for all these games but is dragging the games to draws anyway.

AI engines in chess are well above human ability at this point, but quoted is sort of like saying that Usain bolt isn't and never was the world champion sprinter because cars have always been faster.

Some software developers have higher standards than Civ has shown, and not just with its AI.

I'm pretty sure Usain Bolt is faster in the 10-year dash. :)

I've had my car more than 10 years and I'm pretty sure Bolt hasn't run or moved 100,000+ miles on foot in any capacity :p.

When it comes to machines vs games/sports, it's best to keep the human champion still human. At least unless/until the distinction is meaningless.

I follow the games through the reviews some youtubers do every day. I Ihink Carlsen has a high concept of his own geniality and has understimated Caruana and his nerdy powers.

Never been that interested in chess really, but lately i use to find myself watching Youtubers reviews of the inmortal games played by the old masters. While probably the ones like Fischer, Kasparov or the very Carlsen are the most powerful players ever, i like more the oldest ones as Murphy, Pillsbury, Blackburne or Steinitz. Later ones are maybe too theoretical and strategical and are not that fun, with some exceptions as Lasker or Capablanca.

Carlsen has attacking opportunities today

I think Civ is kinder on the beginner. When you have learned a few basics you can enjoy the game.

Chess, it seems to me, cannot really be enjoyed unless you know high-level strategies.

Or this is just the way I find it. For me the advanced strategies of chess is what it is all about. But in Civ I find lots of different things to enjoy.

I watch it, we've got several grandmasters commenting games on their youtube channels.

Chess engines saw some small blunders, first by Caruana when he pushed his f pawn (both times) and by Carlsen when he moved his a pawn (both times).

It's like declaring a draw in the second round of a prize fight. Magnus may have wanted to play the quick chess.

I am reminded of the final game in Searching for Bobby Fisher where Josh offers the other kid a draw in a won position.
