Is anyone watching Game 12

Evidently, Magnus is saying things that indicate a draw was his objective. Against Kuryakyn, game 12 was only 35 minutes, the shortest time game in World Championship history. History may be repeating.

Nakamura agrees that Carlsen can't really lose in this situation and had no reason to propose a draw.

Magnus just wants to extend his live coverage and stretch out play for more days. He wants more drama to heighten TV coverage.

That's just disappointing. I was rooting for Carlsen in this match, but after last game I can't help but think Caruana deserves to win just because he has more of champion's spirit.

I think Civ is kinder on the beginner. When you have learned a few basics you can enjoy the game.

Chess, it seems to me, cannot really be enjoyed unless you know high-level strategies.

Or this is just the way I find it. For me the advanced strategies of chess is what it is all about. But in Civ I find lots of different things to enjoy.

I think Civ is fun. The random elements of starting location make it enjoyably not repetitious. Great for solitaire; far better than a pack of shuffled cards.

Chess is for winning and losing. The settlement of an interpersonal challenge, free from any luck elements.

No one questions Carlsen's spirit. He has always been one to keep grinding on drawn endgames, for example. I think it's more a matter of him wanting to move on to phase two of the match. As noted above, game 12 vs Karjakin is the shortest in chmpionship history.

Unfortunately, I was not able to watch the rapid chess, so I have seen only the (expected ) result.

I am not sure how I feel about how this played out.

I watched it all.

In the age of computer engines, the player with the best memory can easily outprepare the other in first 15-30 moves. When the real chess begins after theory offered by engines, one still needs ability to play actual, intuitive and strategical chess.

Caruana seemed to be the one with better memory and Carlsen himself saying that he has stagnated for past few years compared to his 2013 self was happy to get over with classical chess to move onto rapid chess where one has to play more intuitively due to time control.

Since Carlsen had like 100 points higher rating than Caruana in rapid chess, the victory seemed inevitable.

Yep. I read some analysis of this and some people apparently believe that rapid chess is more true to the spirit of the game, that the (over)preparation-centric metagame has moved away from what chess is supposed to be.

@Timsup2nothin

I am on the cusp of getting back to the 1200 rating I started with on Chess.com. My game has improved from "utterly horrible" all the way to "very poor"

Hard work pays off.

I haven't been working that hard. Never really got into the games at that link you sent me a while ago for example. And I haven't been reading up on theory or metagame at all, though I'm sort of vaguely planning to in the undefined future. I did watch a couple of chess videos when I was stuck in PIttsburgh during election season, some guy whose name I forget (he was pretty funny) going over games he'd played as a teenager.
