Is BTS Worth it?

Or you can go to metacritic.com where BTS rated just a poke higher among critics (vs Warlords). It recieved less favorable user reviews however, but I'm guessing that's due to them not having patched it properly.

Yea, I just flipped through those who bothered to post comments and there are about 6 people who gave it a flat out 10. The two "5's" came from one guy who needs a new patch, and the other from someone lamenting the fact that civ4 isn't an RTS... WHAT!?!?!?! :sniper: :shifty:

I wouldn't play Civ if it was a RTS......it just wouldn't be right

Multiplayer is more of an RTS though but yeah I prefer my ability to stop and analyze my situation without being rushed. In games like Warcraft 3 I hate just running around trying to just send waves of units at my foes while civ gives me the option to win without resorting to hurried violence.

For BTS I would say its pretty sweet but the unofficial patch is necessary. However you could always just get a really good mod like sevomod for Warlords and get a nice improvement.

So even though Corps, the AP, and airships get lots of Flak the sheer AI skill is and new add ons like Espionage and Forts is just awesome.

Well, that was helpful. At least now we know how you have 4k posts.

Was my post helpful? Absolutely!:D If Bill Gate says that he hasn't yet upgraded to Windows Vista, what does that tell you? For the same token, if a civ fanatic hasn't upgraded to BTS, what does that tell you?;)

I just checked and noticed that I don't have the patch for BTS. Which upgrade to version 3.13 should I use? The official, or the unofficial, and why? What's the differences?

It tells me he's behind the times. Catch up.

*cough* Moonsinger is a she, and she also holds ALL the number 1 spots on deity conquest wins in the Hall of Fame...

Ruler - use both, least that's the word on the street. Apply the official patch, and then staple Bhruic's on top.

Paradigm - I stand corrected... though I could argue I was referring to Bill ^.^

I reckon Moonsinger doesn't hold any records on BTS, which is the game in question

I wouldn't argue with her and her Quechua horde though ;)

I think she'll do just fine when she gets BtS, she is one of the best players here on the forum.

And playing HOF is undoubtedly why she hasn't gotten BtS. Because without the unofficial patch it has "issues".

And I would agree... HOF is behind the times, too. They need to catch up. :)

To the 99% of people who only play SP, I would say absolutely get BtS. Don't knock anything over on your way to the store. Use the in-game update to get V3.13, and then download and install the Unofficial BTS 3.13 Patch.

I believe the HOF mod has most if not all of the unofficial patch fixes as well.

I don't think there will be

Nothing against Moonsinger, but her position in HOF has nothing to do with the question at hand. If someone beats her scores, and says BTS is worth it - yet nothing about the game has changed suddenly it is? It just simply means it hasn't been worth it to Moonsinger for whatever reason.

I personally didn't think Warlords was worth its value as was already argued in this thread. I skipped it, so BTS was worth even more for me personally because I got all the new content in BTS and the small handful available from Warlords. (I don't play scenarios)

I would say BTS is worth it because even with the introduction (for me) of vassal states I rarely use them. And I mean RARELY. Maybe 1 out of 8-10 games I will allow capitulation. And even less do I have someone voluntarily vassal. I personally got the GG and the GSpy. Both are really as good an addition as the other.
I think Colonies were introduced with BTS and can be useful but same with vassals I rarely find a real need for them in the mechanics. Then of course, Warlords added different styles to cities so that an English city looks different than a Korean city. BTS did this with the units to take it one step further. So at this level they are the same.

Then if new civs, wonders, techs, and buildings mean anything to you It offers something. (Also units but it advertises more than there really is sorta because every new civ gets a UU which they counted so you have to subtratct new units minus new civs.) Buildings probably work the same way. But you also get the new espionage system which has some things that seriously, you should never really invest in (like poison water) and others. There is a list of about 7-10 different missins your spy can perform, of which I would only say around 4 are worth its cost in EP. Of which the computer now only knows how to use 1 which is steal tech.

As for the Spy spam mentioned before it has been cut down on. Additionally there is a way to counter this activity. Build some spies of your own. Spies help you catch enemy spies in your territory just by being present in your own territory. I make sure I build a spy every now and then to make sure at least each city has its own spy just chilling inside. Sure I get messages every now and then concerning enemy spies being in my territory but mostly that message is that I caught them. Which safely means I can ignore it. I probably catch between 15-25 spies before an enemy spy actually pulls anything off. And usually what they pull off is sabotaging an improvement on a tile which is easily fixed.

A cool feature I like that I noticed after getting BTS (although it may have came in with Warlords) is choose religions. Where upon discovering Meditation, you can choose any of the 7 religions to found. You dont have to have Buddhism. Not a game changing element but its nice to see different religions playing different roles in each game.

Some of the changes in BTS are actually for the worst IMO. Spain got shafted hard this time around and they were only a mediocre civ to start with. But a few minor modifications and that is easily set back to normal. There is honestly a few things I spotted on the tech tree I do not care for but I plan on changing it up anyways. But all in all I would say that if you found Warlords worth it, BTS should be worth it too. And if you didn't find Warlords worth it and skipped it, BTS is definatley worth it.

Just download the 3.13 patch then come here and install Bhruics patch and all is good to go.

How do you do that??

I bought Civ IV around a month ago; within two weeks I'd upgraded to Warlords and then a week later bought BTS. The vanilla game didn't really cut it on its own and I was disappointed Warlords only gave a handful more civs and unique buildings and didn't build on some of the things missing from Civ II (the last one I played seriously - I bought Civ III for a few pounds on Amazon but playing it was like playing all the annoying bits from Civ II and Civ IV put together...once you are spoiled by even vanilla Civ IV it is hard to go back).

For me it's worth it to have random events and the more "crunchy" Apostolic Palace which functions on an ad-hoc/more responsive basis when it proposes resolutions rather than giving you a standard slate from which to choose from. Having the full raft of civilisations to choose from and a lot of the features from Civ II that vanilla missed out is actually worth the extra outlay if you are serious player.

It is one of the checkboxes below raging barbarians, Aggressive AI, and Random Personalities in the Custom Game options.

Uhm... I don't think having spies of your own has anything to do with catching enemy spies...
Actually, I am pretty sure it does. I would say it does, as I dont have spy problems many people post about. But there is some discussion about it somewhere in the Bhruic patch thread. I believe it is that every spy on a tile in your borders increases the chances of catching enemy spies in your territory. Although, stacking 5 on 1 tile only counts as 1. Also the espionage building the GSpy builds counts as a spy. (So no need to put one in the city that has it.)

EDIT: I was actually able to relocate this specific part in the madness. Here it is. Enjoy. (AlphaBeta starts the discussion post #530)
As I re-read through it, it may be that they only effect the tile they are on. But I also have suspicion that having a high espionage ratio with the civ(s) trying to send spies into your turf also increases the chance to catch them. I do these two things and enemy spies rarely get to do anything before they are caught in my territory. Well, AFAIK or can tell anyways.
