Is Civ 2 on the way out?

CivMGE > Civ3 ok for me (Civ3 will be probably the best when it'll have a good scenario addon with a good & easy scenario editor)

but i think that Civ Test of Time > CivMGE !

Civ3 is new and the new thing is always fun. I'm playing only civ3 right now and no civ2 at all, but I think I will go back to civ2 after civ3 lost it's fun. Civ2 is simply a better game in the long run.

I have about 3 dozen computer games -- with 30 yet to be played (ever, including Alpha Centauri). I'll pick up Civ III when I see it at discount prices.:D

An Opinion.

Civ2 has its problems and I'll be the first to decry them, but civ3 is a washout/loser AFAIAC, and I predicted that this would be the case. I will still play Civ2 well into the future. It'll be awhile before a better game comes along. The real advantage to Civ2 is the unbounded scenario-creation capability. If the game disappoints you, there is always the option to remake it just the way you want it to be. And you can also enjoy the fruits of other's labor in a similar fashion. Every time a player turns creator, and remakes the game (thereby turning out a new scenario) the process adds new playability to the original game. It's a surprise to me, because usually old games disappear pretty quickly once their successor/sequels hit the market, but Civ2 will very likely be around for quite some time.

There is also one major difference between Civ2 and civ3; Microprose vs. firaxis. Microprose turned out several strategic type games, each of which I enjoyed. I can honestly say that Microprose never saddled me with a loser of a game. I can't say that about firaxis. As a matter-of-fact, every single game made by firaxis that I've ever purchased has failed to function correctly. NO EXCEPTIONS. The difference between the two companies is telling. The former was on target, and repeatedly released good, enjoyable products, all of which I still own, many of which I still play. Firaxis is a fly-by-night, borderline-competent, miserable excuse for a game company and it's so-called "products" consistently tread the thin line between consumer-ripoff and outright theft.

I play civ 3 at home and civ 2 at work.
Civ 2 requires less from the computer and so I'm able to multi-taks a lot easier. Also, I don't want to cart eh cd back and forth because I can;t copy it or anything.
Scenarios is all I really play now anyways. I've never tried a multi-player though.

Is there to be an upgrade on civ II any time soon?Civ II still has a long way to go with me, but as some have said ; how much more can be written on it!

Freeciv will ultimately replace Civ2MP

And maybe even Civ3 in the end. Who knows?...

I was one of the first buyers on the old continent when civ3 came out in the USA. I ordered the limited edition at amazon.com. But when I received it, I was very disappointed. Many features (graphics, city menue) remembered me at call to power - in my opinion not worth to be bought.
Ít seems the civ3 developpers had forgotten all the good ideas and realized all the bad ones...
I won't play civ3 any more.

LOL, So are you saying that you prefer Firaxis products over Microprose, or are you saying you don't like Microprose as much as Firaxis?

My 2 cents.... at this time, I prefer Civ 2, but for reasons of time and an impending computer upgrade, I have not installed (or played) Civ 3 yet.

No matter how good (or bad) Civ 3 ultimately becomes, Civ 2 will be as good now as it was last year and as it will be in 10 years. It's simply a great game with lots of replayability and lots of paths to success.

Personally, I'd like to see Civ 2 revisited, and most of the "well known" issues fixed/updated without incurring the massive core chages to the graphic engine (e.g., skip the 3D engine). Revamp the AI with an expert-based system, and allow the tables to be accesssed by scenario builders to control most of the resulting parameters :). Very doable, but the sad reality is that window dressing drives most of the managment and marketing decision in the game world. :(

Wouldn't Freeciv be to your liking? What you're describing sounds alot like it. Who needs management and marketing when you can do it yourself.

"LOL, So are you saying that you prefer Firaxis products over Microprose, or are you saying you don't like Microprose as much as Firaxis?"

I'm mystified by this response.

The only thing I can figure is that you somehow failed to comprehend my use of the word "former." Let me make it clear;

fir-crapsis = crap/Microprose = worthwhile product.

Can't get much clearer than that.

FreeCiv is very very nice, and a super duper idea... and I personally hope it does well... but the fact is that it's not "civ", at least not yet.

What I had in mind is something in the form of a major official patch, possibly in conjuction with a special release of Civ 1, Civ 2, and Civ 3 in the same box... Thus merging the flavors of each civ into an update for its loyal fans, and introducing the fans of one version to another.
At least that is the marketing strategy to fund the patches.

I was being very toung in cheek, since your original post made it quite clear you like Microprose's realeases over Firaxis' releases. It was an attempt at humor, but I guess it was not real obvious when viewed though print.

It's like the old joke when the older brother is going to flip a coin with the younger one to see who gets to play with the toy, and the older one says, "Heads I win, Tails you lose..."

LOL, sorry the joke fizzled! ;)

Heh it's like comparing Smash Bros on the N64 to Smash Bros. on the Gamecube. If Civilization 3 is a great game, more fun that Civ2 for me, it would be hard goign back. Smash Bros N64 is slow compared to Smash Bros. GCN.

Graphics are nice but no substitute for solid gameplay. Like civ2 sure the graphics are dated but that's not why I play. It's a great strategy game. I remember when I first started playing, shocked, awed, this was the game I would've created myself. It's hard to put into words let's say the perfect strategy game was before me? This game was exactly what I was looking for. Maybe the only thing it could improve on is the graphics :P

You know what, they should have a lot more wonders. IS mount Rushmore in Civ3? Some wonders shouldn't become obsolete until something happens in the game.

"The colossus doesn't work because we know how to fly".

Urgh, the Colossus was wiped out from an earthquake, not because of some airplanes. What I'm trying to say, is that there should be options to let wonders work forever or make them become obsolete by something happening in the game. I don't know what, but they will figure it out. Now I suppose if they wanted to add the World Trade center in an upcoming Civ game, the game will have to be edited. URGH.

The WTC would boost all cities trade by 10% and the city it's in would have double the trade.

:D
My two penneys worth is simply this; it is pretty clear from every ones comments in these forums that civ II is still a winner with all the players!
If the world was a perfect place; ; the manufacturer would see this ,note the happy players;[dance] ; and simply bring out an upgrade on the game!
The amount of people still using this forum shows that there are still a lot of fans of civ II!
