Calling something a force of nature is a way to contrast it with human intervention. This is useful, because as humans we can choose what impact we have. Unlike the rats. With regard to species extinction and the like, the emotion in play is the desire not to change things that we cannot undo. There's no reason that the birds are better than rats for nature, but now that there are rats, the birds aren't an option.
