Is it important if one can speak/write more than one languages?

My native language is Polish (I'm happy that I do not have to learn it - try it and you will know why;).

First foreign language to learn was Russian - till end of 80's it was compulsory in C/E Europe. Great adventure for primary school pupil, especially writing in Cyrillic.

Then, in high school I started to learn English. Letters the same as in Polish, but pronunciation - terrible! It seemed very illogical to me for the first few years. And all these "a"s, "an"s and "the"s. Awful!

Finally, during my studies, I learned a dead language - Latin. This one was the worst. a huge number of rules, just like in Polish:)

Today, I use English every day in my job and hobbies, Russian - almost forgotten (only listening to some nostalgic Russian music), and Latin I use sparingly while dealing with some maxims and epigrams.

Can we really consider Dutch to be a language? It's more like a bastardized dialect of German.

Please, I'd love to hear your justification for this assertion.

Spanish. Call me ********. I have spend about three years in France and cant speak the language but I am glad not to be alone:
In Paris they just simply opened their eyes and stared when we spoke to them in French! We never did succeed in making those idiots understand their own language.

Czech is all right I suppose. Like Polish its tough to learn. I hate German (and Germans in a way) so the chances of learning it are quite slim. I like very much the sound of Latin though. I could wrestle with azbuka I suppose but any other alphabhet seem just too much trouble... So yes, it boils down to Spanish for me.

Přeji příjemnou zábavu.

Even if the Germans wanted to take the Dutch and their bicycles in, there's soooo many differences between Dutch and German that they're incompatible, even if some of the western dialects of German are mutually intelligible with Dutch.
