Is it Possible? Resolve Stack vs Stack combat on a Tactical Battle Map

(since I love this idea I'm giving it a bump...)

Is it fair to say, then, that we'd need to safedelete all information ON the map (storing it of course), 'decorate' the new map, run the tactical side of things, then wipe again and remove all decorators? Is this on the right track?

I would have thought that you would have done this with a new screen and map not touching anything on the current map except at the end of combat the units in the stacks would show the results.

So it would be something like:-
1) create a new map based on the terrain the battle is happening
2) place the units on the map (remove them from main map?)
3) have at it as per normal rules
4) at end of battle get rid of map and place units back on the main map.

Doing it this way should minimise the chances of corupting the main game.

I like this idea very much but have no idea how to program it.

Why not just split your stack into substacks and occupy positions around your objective? Tactical combat already exists in the game. You can flank and maneuver in Civ IV; you just have to be creative about how you position your units prior to attacking on your turn. The direction from which you attack a defender, and their corresponding readiness posture makes an enormous difference in the success or failure of your attack.

If you simply march a single stack of units, from a single direction, against defenders waiting for you to attack from that direction, you're kind of asking for it, both in terms of the difficulty you'll encounter and the dullness of play.

This is all in your imagination - the direction attacking/defending units are facing have zero impact on succes/failure and damage inflicted/taken, but it is certainly an interesting concept for a True Flanking mod.

On the original topic then the applications for multiple maps (especially if of variable dimensions) would be numerous. I hope those of you that were already trying to find a viable solution for implementing such a feature have not yet given up - and also that more will be inspired to investigate the options for making this happen.

I imagine it MAY be possible someday once some further work is done on C2C's multi-map method. That's on hold at the moment but is still one of our highest priorities for the mod as a whole. Once fully developed, I don't think it will be much further a stretch to work in something like this project though for C2C we may be pushing the memory and processing boundaries too far by then so it'd have to be another mod that operates on our dll and mods it a bit further for this purpose. You never know though... C2C keeps breaking any boundaries we think we have so perhaps eventually this could manifest as a late mod project and we could figure out how to go about it. However, I think it more likely that our AXXXE project would come to the foreground before this sort of thing would manifest on the CivIV engine.

Thanks for the kind and precise answer. :)

I (should say we, since I am not the only one) 'll wait and see. ;)

For now, I have a much smaller idea on how to mod combat, but no modding ability.

I'll post my simple questions on a more proper topic.

Thanks again, and good work with C2C. :goodjob:
