I have no clue if this would be possible or not- what I would like to do is to be able to "link" for lack of a better word to file on my own computer (in this case a song) in my sig, so that when clicked on people could listen/download it... is this possible- i ask as I dont think files like that are allowed to be put on the folder thinggy where you can put pics/unit downloads and such...

but is it possible to do somthing along those lines?

No, it's not, AFAIK; however, you can always zip it, upload the zip file, then link to that file. Then when the person downloads it they can unzip it. It's the same way many files for Civ are uploaded and downloaded here. :)

If you want an alternative to that, where no zipping/unzipping takes place, I don't think there is one.

how might one zip then?

-sorry- I'm not very computer literate :(

With WinZip, for instance. :)

You can use WinZip. If you don't already have it, you can download a trial version (or of course, actually buy it) here. Once you have it installed, whenever you see a file that you want to zip, right-click it, and one of the options should be "WinZip." Hold your mouse over that option, and other options should appear, such as the option "add to zip file." Click that, and then it's fairly self-explanatory from there. Once you have the zip file, upload it at this site like you would any other file.

Unzipping is the opposite. You find a zipped file (which is recognizable by its icon -- a folder with a zipper around it), then right-click, and one of the options should be "extract to..." You use that option to create an unzipped file.

Hope that helps. :)

Basically, Xen, you need to get the file hosted by some website or another. There are methods of allowing people access to files on your comp, but that involves a lot more working (read: setting up your computer as a server itself).

I suggest that you don't upload a music files, unless it has been composed by yourself, and you own the intellectual property rights to it.

Otherwise, its not a much different file-sharing concept than kazaa, except its a whole-lot less efficient. :)
what ainwood said. before going along these lines, you can't upload an mp3 or any other format of a band that hasn't expressly given you the right to share it on the net :)

I'm sure you wouldn't be up to piratey antics like that though. :)
You could get a website or something, and just put the file there - like geocities or something. My ISP gives me 10MB of space, so maybe you have something like that too. anyway, just upload the file there and get a URL link to it, and put that in your sig.

EDIT: by the by, i don't know how much you'd get out of zipping an MP3 file, they're pretty compressed as is.

The song in question was put up to general relese, at least not to my knowledge... though what if a song was put up by a site in full by the band itself- similer to what the no doubt website has done with some of its more famous (and less famous) songs?

(as a note, if anyone would know about it, the song I was planning on would be the remix by fat boy slim of the bob marley song "I'm a rainbow too")

Unless you own the copyright you do not have the right to distribute it. Even if a band posts it on a website, they are normally only granting the right to download for own use. They are not granting the right to redistribute.

Dont do it. It breaks the law.

Could you include a link to the band's site where the song is available? perhaps to the song itself, if it has its own unique identification/page to be linked to? That way you pretty much sidesstep the copyright issues. As far as I know, most folk that use the internet understand people will link sites to yours if they like them. Or would you need permission for that, too?

Do I need permission to make this post?

there's nothing wrong with linking to their site like barron said.

See, Xen, if you had the song and your were only going to have it on your computer for private use, that's one thing. Even if you just listen to it with another person it's okay. When you put in your sig, you are then distributing it. It's no longer simply for "personal use," now it is piracy.
