Is it true

There's no reason why it shouldn't be true. I've never seen it that I remember, but I have lost MA to musketmen recently.

I think it's more of a symbol for the silly things that can happen in the game.

I believe that I did lose an MA vs a spear in the GR17, may have been a tank, but I think it was an MA. In fact I nearly lost an army on one.

It is just one of those freak rolls that you will see, if you play enough games. In one of these GR games we will kill thousands of units. Eventually a super lotto comes in.

haha... me to... that was the most pathetic moment of my game... when my Veteran MA came across the regular spearman, and lost....

i have had Armies lose like that, to really low level defensive units... Mostly armies of cavalry, but Cavalry Armies w/ only like 2/16 hp lost, they still should utterly CRUSH spearman... but they don't

Well, you do the maths...

Cavalry= 6 attack points
Spearmen= 2 defense points.

Cavalry 2 hitpoints.
Spearmen 4 hitpoints. 2 (Defense) times 2 (2 Extra Hitpoints) = 4.

25% Fortification Bonus= 5 defense points.
10% terrain bonus (I'm being generous here because you commonly verse spearmen on forests and hills)= 5.5 Defense Bonus.
And the spearmen would probably be in a city by the time you get cavs. So that's +50% defense bonus. So that adds up to.....

7.75 defense bonus.

That's a 63% chance of the spearman winning!

Anyone remembers the old Battleship vs Phalanxfortifiedonamountaininafortress story from Civ I ? poor Battleships

NO, NO, NO!!! you misunderstood what i was trying to say... the Cavalry Army only had 2 hp lost!!! meaning it had 14/16 hp... i probably should have said that, instead of what i put... i think that changes the odds a little :p

I think the whole :spear: phenomenon was based around the CivII Pikeman vs Armor matchup.

Armor: 10 Att. There are no Tanks or Modern Armor units. This is the only tank in the game.

Pikeman: 2 Def. Double Def vs. fast units (including Armor).

I think being fortified on a Mountain in a Fortress gives the Pike something like +225% Def based on CivII's engine. This means that a Pikeman can have up to 13 Def. So not only CAN a pike beat a tank, the pike WOULD REGULARLY beat the tank.

:spear: :spear: :spear: :spear: etc.

The Super Spearman saga began in Civ3 Vanilla. Since the game doesn't care *what* the units are, and just looks at the attack/defense numbers, there is a definite chance that an Ancient Age unit (e.g., a Spearman) will defeat a modern Age unit (e.g., a Tank). When it was first discussed, people pointed out the very long odds of it happening (i.e., a million to one, or some such). Then we pointed out that given the number of games that had played, and the number of combats that had occurred throughout the community, it was not surprising that some had seen it happen.

Then we figured out how to avoid the worst situations: Don't attack when understrength, don't attack across rivers, don't attack units fortified in cities, etc. Of course, it all just boils down to "Don't attack unless you are prepared to lose your attacker(s)."

Oh, ok. You must be unlucky, I've never had a cav army die to a spearmen.

yeah i hate that
that also appears in civ IV, if the tanks damaged, but how can a tank lose against a Musketeer???

Molotov Cocktails,Tank traps...of course this can happen ,rarely of course buts its not that unrealistic when it happens from time to time.
See it so: those dudes may wield spears but that dosnt mean that they dont know what they are facing.
However another question would be how many man are in a spearman unit and how many tanks are in a tank unit.A large number of spearman might get lucky and isolate or trap a small number of tanks and beat them(remember the Ewoks? ;) ) but i doubt that a spearman "Division" can defeat an entire Tank Division.

You should start to complain when ya loose a Jet fighter against a spearman :)

If the spear captures the city, all air and naval units are destroyed. But why would a spear capture a city if you have Jet Fighters?

if you leave the city undefended and it sneaks up on you and you forget about it/can't get a unit in fast enough

happened to me before... but i didn't lost jet fighters, just the city
