Is "Majesty" (by Microprose, or the sequel by Paradox Interactive) any good?

From the random pics of it i saw it looks like some sort of fantasy building/war rts (?) pretty similar to the Seven Kingdoms series (particularly 1, but also 2).

I like the style of the gfx, cause i love pseudo-3d graphics which are 3d rendered models  Also they seem quite near the excellent SK artist's style (maybe he is even working in the project).

I read there is also a far more recent version, by Paradox Interactive, Majesty 2 (2009).

Can't recommend Majesty.

It lacks the adrenaline and multi-tasking of an RTS in which you control your own units, it lacks enough depth and strategy to be a good base-building game, and it just isn't very challenging. It is also very repetitive and gets old fast.

Haven't tried Majesty 2, but most of the same criticisms were leveled at it by reviewers.

I played Majesty 2 for a while. Not a lot of depth and it is rather simplistic, but I had fun for a while. The kinda game you pick up in a sale, get your £5 worth, then forget about it.

I have this game (Majesty 2) and according to steam I have played it for 11 hours.

I will install it and see if I can remember the game. Cause I mean.. 11 hours is not insignificant, I must have liked the game if I played it for that long. I just can't remember anything about it.

Majesty 1 was amazing. Many years ago when it was newer. It lacked depth in some ways but it was quite enjoyable. Sure you can't control units but that's the point. It's EXTREMELY popular among a small niche of people who are into sims and city building and such. I worked on an open source engine where one of my projects was to make a Majesty like with significant influence from E:RotMK and KoDP. Sadly all my free time is spent on EVE now.

Indeed, M1 (plus its Addon - best is the HD version on Steam) is a gem. It has its flaws, but anyone who is a bit into macromanagment games where your people have a bit of their own mind (Tropico-style) it is worth to try.

M2 deviated from the orginal concept (too much, IMO) and turned it into a hardcore startegy game with a frustratingly steep learning curve and went away from sandbox-style to a linear campaign. Which might mean that someone who loves M1 might not like M2 and vice versa...though I haven't heard of many people in the latter group, honestly.
