Is multiplayer gimmicky?

Pretty agree with you devil bart. The worong side of this path is that it takes more time to get chivalry than steel. But if you can resist against them for a couple of turns before, well yes you can have an option somewhere if you can manage this well.

I agree, in the case of low-iron, fast chivalry is the best bet against longswords. Pikeman spam should work to slow down the initial attack until the knights come out (fortify on rough terrain).

Turn 70-80 or so is the timing of knights, which will usually be against 4-6 longswords, if you are being longsword rushed.

Of course if opponent does some expert optimized longsword upgrade rush at around turn 50-55, you might be in some trouble ;) But then, optimized rushes will always cause trouble, and this type of rush will not be easily reinforced, as your opponent will have to have sacrificed a lot of economy for the earlier timing.

A good strategy vs swords or longswords is to try to pillage the iron with a horse, or at least just run around and cause trouble. If you can get 1-2 swords to be busy chasing down the horse rather than attacking you, the expedition is a success, whether or not you actually pillage anything.

I always figured it would be very gimmicky, because things like tearing up the one road leading to a capital or sneak attacks from the sea to snag the capital of an otherwise better empire would be something computer players don't use but human players could.

Always keep a defensive force next to your capital, unless it's litterally impossible to sneak around to it. I just played a game that I jumped from last to first place because the guy in first moved his entire army into an attacking war on an arc. map. 2 musket men for defense was not enough. I knocked him out of the game thanks to him panicing and bringing his navy back 1 at a time to stop my ground troops while they were still embarked, leading to them getting shreded by caravels. :D

Nicely done swmaniac! This is why committing to a war is dangerous with accessibility to multiple opponents. Getting caught out of position is deadly.

I usually try to have a backup fleet of frigates, because I am always terrified of losing seapower. Many frigates for offense, 6 frigates for defense, if I can manage to get ahead enough.

Thank you. :D
He wasn't totally out of position; I lost a lot of units, but I got through and knocked him out of the game.

Yes, always leave a defensive force; especially if your opponent's second largest city is next to your capital. XD
