Is my reputation forever ruined?

It was my idea to conquer the French at the same time as the Chinese (I like world wars!), to get the Romans to attack the Chinese while I attack the French . I hoped it would work out, but for one thing: The Romans wouldn't join me no matter what. I realized that some time ago I had declared war on the Chinese (Really long time ago.) but I underestimated and they overran my defenses so I quickly sued for peace. I had signed a military alliance with the Romans and I forgot about that. I guess when I went for peace with China it broke the treaty. Well, I guess that is costing me alot. I tried to do this with every other civ and any other civ won't join me no matter what. I asked the Egyptians, who I just discovered, to declare war on China offering them all of the techs they didn't have (They were behind by alot.) and all of my gold and luxuries, etc, but they wouldn't, saying :"I know what you did with the Romans. I won't trust you."

Is this forever? I'm playing Vanilla?

Also, I broke a right of passage with the Russians and then destroyed them, but after a few turns civs were willing to negotiate right of passage with me still.

Yes, it's forever, regardless of what version you're playing.

As for this:
Also, I broke a right of passage with the Russians and then destroyed them, but after a few turns civs were willing to negotiate right of passage with me still.
If the russians had no contact with any other civs, then you can do whatever you want to them and your rep won't get trashed. After all, if they don't know anyone, they can't tell anyone, right?

Do you really need MAs?

As MA workaround, you could always open the can of worms and sign MPPs.

Or you could open pandora's box and make MAs combined with peace treaties.
Be prepared to get backstabbed, because every time a MA-victim gets wiped out or you sign peace, you break the peace treaty and every time your ally signs peace, they break the peace treaty.
In the latter case though, you could also sign peace with the victim and bribe them against your former ally (now foe) in the process, just while you're seriously at it.:fdevil:

ROP: (if Russia was known by other civs)
Whether you have actually a ROP or not, a ROP-rape occurs when you declare with your units in enmy territory.
I guess you did not ROP-rape (?), but just broke the ROP deal. I think other civs would still sign a ROP, although you can't probably get (e.g.) a lump sum from them within the deal.

I'd say go for it and find out what happens. If nothing else, it's a learning experience for you.

Sometimes, even if your rep is borked, offering a tech or two will cause the AS to sign the alliance or ROP treaty anyway, but they could break the treaty more easily.

You know something? This "I know what you did to X, I won't trust you" thing shouldn't have been implemented that way. If you offer techs, gold and luxuries to a civ, what's to stop them from taking the techs, gold and luxuries and then backing out on the deal?? :)

And also, you'd think that the AI would be less likely to be upset by that when it's another AI that they haven't been getting along with. "So, you RoP raped the Persians? Good, I hate them!"

You can avoid damage to your reputation, when you play on an island map. You just have to care that most CIVs don't have contact with others. It seems that your reputation is transfered by other CIV that tell a tale about your deeds. But if they don't have contact with the victims, they can't get this known.

Nothing. It's a taken risk. The AS are all filthy cheaters against humans. In most cases, when i sign an alliance the AS withdraws well before the 20 turn period has expired.

That remains me of another quirky aspect of Civ 3. Frequently you will have your foreign advisor telling you something on the lines of, "I don't know if we should trust the Persians. they betrayed our friends the Greeks." This is when I was frequently at war with the Greeks and we were no "friends" at all (they were furious at me).
