Is playing Civ 4 linked to higher intellignce?

The percentage of people with an IQ over 150 is so tiny that it makes tests of such a nature uneconomical to produce. You would need someone with an IQ of over 150 to create the test.

Wow, lots of intelligent and informative replies. I just want to point out I was not implying that playing Civ4 makes you smarter or more educated, nor was I implying that you are a genius for playing it. TheMeInTeam hit the nail on the head with this...

...the nature of the game is such that it's average player is likely more intelligent than the average player for other games. So if you want to link Civ IV and intelligence from this standpoint, I'd deem it appropriate, Civ IV was probably designed for people wanting to use more intelligence than say what Halo demands.
I was merely pondering whether Civ 4 attracts a different, in certain ways more intelligent breed of human. Again, when I use the word intelligent I do not mean rocket surgeons, just someone who is better then average and more interested in certain things. Perhaps having patience and putting in the time to learn and strategize as a recreational activity can be qualified as a type of intelligence.

Lol, has to be said (ive DM'ed), but I dont think gaining intelligence is retroactive, one doesnt instantly learn more languages or get better results in last years maths test (without taking the test again :)).

It will however, apply to deciphering the magically trapped glyph on the locked door around the corner, or the magicians ability to memorize from now on.

(maybe your thinking of constitution?)

That Baby T-shirt has got a few LOL's here.

Hmm id say yes, this games target audience are mainly people who have fun by solving problems with their minds, just like puzzle games. Usually the people who enjoy this are a bit more intelligent on average since theyll succeed more often and therefore get more enjoyment out of whatever they are doing.
I wouldnt go as far as saying that people who are better at this game are smarter then those who are worse since your skill in this game is mainly based on experience although intelligence could give players a small edge (mainly when
important decisions have to be made that have lots of factors involved).

I dont think civ makes you (much) smarter though, altough it requires you to actively use your brain its no used as often as when your solving regular puzzles and as far as i know that doesnt make people smarter either.

Bah! I have an IQ of 999! Triple digit IQ is the new thing in town!

Actually, triple digit IQs are not the new thing in town, they're quite common... unless you wouldn't count 100 for example as triple digit, but then you'd have other issues ;)

Actually, I think playing civ is probably more linked to one's monomaniacal desires to rule the world than to one's IQ...

Bang on

I think this game is good because it teaches you to look at problems from more than one perspective. Also I think it makes people open their eyes to the real world the powers that be, and how they came to be.

No.....

The 100 points in IQ tests are defined as being the average point of the scores obtained by a sample group ( just because you can't test everyone :p ). Half of the pop will have more than 100 points in the tests and half of the pop will have less than 100 ( excluding the small fringe of pop that will have exactly 100 :) )... if this doesn't happen, the test was not well calibrated ;)

I don't think the 100 has changed in response to human changes, though, so it may be anywhere from 45-55%.

Well, the calibration of IQ tests is a "dirty waters" issue, since the original calibrations had some unproven asssumptions behind them and that leaded to a lot of false conclusions ( I won't elongate on that in here... )......

Anyway IQ tests base heavily on the logical association tests and it is highly discussible that those abilities are the core of what we call inteligence ( The husband of a high school teacher i had was University investigator on Physics , scored 180 in IQ easily and it was unable to match socks colors without assistance or it was able to drive 300 km before he noticed that he took the wrong turn ;) ). Any way , strong logical associations ability is definitely not the most important ability to have when playing civ IV ;)

Sociopaths would probably do very well at Civ (and probably do), but then again Sociopaths tend to be on the upper end of the intelligence curve to begin with.

Sociopaths with OCD would be very strong players.

I don't think Schizophrenics would do very well at all.
