Can't start Civ 5 tonight.. Having played it nightly since October it seems very amatuer of Steam to be unable to keep the server up over Christmas. They may need to look to their pirate competition to learn how to do this. Otherwise I'm disappointed.

..I know - but why with a working high speed connection, a very installed version and a clean computer (checked) is the thing not starting. I see a new update for Siam of all places was released since I last played. Anybody else having problems? Free Ireland..I'm in Dublin - is this local - thats why I'm looking at Steam.

you don't even need steam turned on to play ciV. try restarting your computer, I've had the same issue you have once or twice and that always fixed it. also, have you tried connecting directly to the game and playing in offline mode yet?

Already restarted, flushed cache, been through the task manager for funny background tasks. Will give up for tonight...just a glitch, obviously not gamewide. Thanks for the thoughts, folks..? BTW..I like the game. Will be back in a better mood :) Merry Jinglebells.

if the game won't start without steam then you're in trouble, it might not have loaded the patch properly. lschnarch had this same problem, he ended up having to reload the entire game ;( look for his thread if this is indeed the case.

Unfortunately, my thread won't help him, as the final downloading of the patch would still be obligatory. :(

Nevertheless, that would be the thread:

Read your thread...and yes, it seems to point the way. Uninstall everything Steam related as well as Civ 5 itself. Maybe the game is worth it, maybe not. Perhaps next time the halfwits release a so-called hotfix for the game, they'll test it first. Only thing I don't see mentioned is the specs the game has failed on - mine is a Windows 7 64 bit OS. Was using DirectX 10/11 drivers/separate graphics card on a Dell Studio 17 laptop. Therefore nothing exotic, am thinking maybe the 64 bit area threw them ?

What, exactly, is the message you are getting?

As for the server, in case you haven't noticed there are around ~1200 games and packs on sale for cheap, cheap prices on Steam right now and a lot of servers are under heavy load from people downloading a lot of games. If its a download/connection problem (though you should be able to load Steam in offline mode just fine) then go into Steam's settings menu and change your download region (to anywhere, could be on another continent) until it works.

The point is there is no message. Nothing. Game will not launch. I see the server is busy...therefore not Steam at fault, I'm assuming its the hotfix thats the problem. The game has survived several well heralded patches so far, then one quick hotfix takes it down. I think the "quick" part may have led to problems with certain configs. Rushing to buy for Christmas is one thing, rushing to develop is quite another.

As it stands - I've reinstalled steam
reinstalled game
and now Steam is telling me it'll be ready to play in 2 hours.
