Is the AI capable of a large scale amphibious assault?

In a Tiger I, presumably...
Just that. I've never seen it happen, only the odd archer unloading from a galley to attack an undefended city.

Has anybody seen a huge D-Day scale landing form the AI?

I saw a two galleon load of cossaks landing to capture a two city island defended by a musket, a pike and two spears. I also had four cavs and managed to defend but then they brough another galleon load ...

I have had 1-2 galleons loaded with troops land every couple of turns on one particular stretch of coast. The galleons where each protected by one Ironclad. Additional Ironclads and Frigates bombarded terrian improvements in the area.

Americans attacked me with 8 infantry, 8 cavalry and 8 marines last time we were at war. Kind of funny, since they just unloaded the marines rather than using them rigth away. It gives me great pride to say that I anticipated their move and had some 8 modern armor standing by to wipe this force completely off the map.

I was stuck playing as the English and was hopelessly behind in tech. The japanase sent a transport guarded by a full battleship and unloaded 1 tank and 1 infantry.

I was able to take both of them out with a stack of knights (told you I was behind) but was really surprised that they only sent 2 units to scare me

I can't think of ever having faced more than about a dozen enemy units landing on my shore ... and even those numbers were relatively late in the game ... post-rail net and after I worry about such things.

The AI would rather send 10-20 units at a time then 100 all at once. They don't get the overwhelming numbers concept.

So, even if the AI attempts an amphibious assault, it wouldn't be a large scale one.

yah, but if it was land assault...i have seen 50 cavs+ all stacked together, coming into my terrority....of corz, i forced them to declare war and then wipe out most of them b4 they even got to my first city...then they start running back....and i go on to wipe their country off...all thanks to their declaring war~

I myself I have never suffered any really serious intercontinental attacks from the AI. The worst I can think of was when the Persians turned up with some Galleons and unloaded a dozen-odd Inf and Cav next a poorly defended city (poorly as in defended by a single Cav unit). However, thanks to my railroads I could throw in a lot of troops, killing most of the invasion force in my turn, and seeing the pityful survivors commit suicide during their next turn by throwing themselves at my suddenly strengthened defenses. The Persians went on to have a thoroughly ****ed time during the Modern Age, since their huge Empire had just one source of Oil, which accidentally happened to be next to the city that was first in line for my invasion.

I've, however, seen quite substantial continentlets change hands from one AI to the next, which kind of implies that the AI is capable of more material invasions.

I think the AI is just worse at defending against invasion. The AI will unload lots of tanks and such into a captured coastal city, but they have to hold it for a few turns to get reinforcements there. We humans don't readily allow them to take a coastal city in the first place. Even if they land thier invasion on a mountain, we proceed to cripple it before it even gets to attack, and beef up out defense there as well. If the AI invades the AI with a dozen or so units on a mountain, the AI will waste a few untis trying to attack, but will leave most of the stack ready for attack (mostly due to the AI's inability to effectively use artillery).

I've never had to worry about my coastline in any of my games, looking at reports from spies the AI never even HAS a navy, even on continent games.

I was just wondering how enjoyable it would be to play on an archipelago map if the AI was totally incapable of amphibious assault, but it looks like they are, to a degree. Thanks everyone for their responses.
