...or am I massively undervaluing them? 50 gold per open borders per AI is adding up really quickly.

It feels a bit exploitative. I've been ok with it on the grounds that I will gift to the AI and the AI never gifts to me (can two diplo problems make a right?), but it does feel like an issue.

i dont think its an issue because trading open borders keeps them happy , so by selling them you lose out on keeping them a bit happier . Maybe im wrong on that but thats what i assumed. Plus i would happily pay 50 gold for open borders often without feeling ripped off.

The AI likes open borders because they're scouting your territory to see what you have and what you can throw against them.

50 gold makes sense to me. I'd happy pay 50 gold if I wanted to scout the lands beyond France or whoever

I have gotten as much as 53g. I think it works better than pre-patch, though, because OB offers aren't guaranteed. At least at the higher levels, the AI drives a much harder bargain for OB's if you don't have optimal relations with them.

So true. I asked Lizzy (who was guarded) for OB...and the cost was 5000+ gold (all I had), 100 gpt, and 4 luxury resources!

I generally try and avoid open Borders with AI - often seem to DoW me when they see my typically weak early game military....aka my warrior :-)

With no spies, or other intelligence gathering mechanisms in Civ5 (as yet), buying open borders is the only way the AIs can get the low-down on your stuff.

50g isn't much to the AIs anyway as they're usually rich. It's essentially free money unless you play on Immortal/Deity when you probably have to be a bit more cautious as to who you let into your lands.
