total newb here.... loved civ 1 WAY back in college... havn't played in years

anyway...im downloading the demo and the question is.... is the demo patched to fix the original problems?

Pretty sure the demo is not patched. But you probably won't notice the imbalances and flaws that existed on release in the few hours of demo. The new patches have made the game much better though. I would highly recommend it. Just play demo to see if your system runs it well.

And just don't abuse Alexander's Companion Cavalry :p

ok, back to report.....

I played 3 demo games all the way to 100 turns...... twice with persia, and once with Alexander.....

100 turns is really not enough for this kind of demo....

my thoughts....

As an avid liker of AOE III, I cant help but think they tried to make civ V (in some ways) similar. I mean... "city states" are kinda like owning the trade routes in AOE III and the barbarians are like the natives in a weird kinda way except that they are not on anyones "team". I know it is not an exact analogy but it crossed my mind within the first 30 minutes, without any predisposition or idea that it would be like that.

They probably also thought: "Hey, how can we incorporate smaller "nations" without making them "civs" oh i got an idea.... "city states". I can see how it is more of a military strategy game, and my overall rating would be a 7 out of 10. I probably will pick it up when the time is right and the price is right.

I have heard all day long that civ4 is a better game, and it may be in terms of "depth" but i have never played it, but it is cheap.

Anyway, I like these sort of strategy games... hate the new bloody heads exploding games that have come around in the last ten years... It is so "old" now...kinda like movies with so many special effects, but no story. I think in some ways even the kids are getting tired of it. Although there are some pretty base people still out there :) relax i am joking. To each his own

So any thoughts on any other games i might have missed (since I am not really up to date on this stuff--as you can see AOEIII was the last game i really liked :) ) that are GREAT strategy games without too much weirdness? I'm not really down with say warcraft sort of thing, I like more of the world conquest and building thing even simulation.... and I don't like anything too immoral, if you understand what I mean.

just would like to stay away from POORLY made games.

Sales for Civ V on steam a pretty frequent. If you are unsure, you can probably get the game for 10 dollars cyber monday sale or christmas sale.
