Is there a way to adjust your monitor refresh rate in-game?

Like I run 1920x1440, so my refresh rate in windows is 60Hz, but since I run at lower resolution in Civ 4 (1600x1200) I'd like to run at 85Hz. Anyone know how to do this?

What kind of monitor do you have? The reason I ask is because if it's an LCD, they don't have refresh rates.

First make sure you have your proper monitor drivers installed. Not the "Generic VGA Display" ones or "Default Monitor" or whatever they may be called. Unless your monitor has no drivers, and i guess then the "Default Monitor" ones will be fine. (Monitor drivers are primarily used to communicate the supported resolutions and refresh rates to Windows so you can't use higher resolutions then supported).

Secondly, run "dxdiag" from Start, Run: and then click on the "More Help" tab, and then chose the "Override" button.

Here, type in the refresh rate value you like to play your games at.

Note: Make sure your refresh rate is supported at the resolution you want to play at, otherwise it is possible to damage your monitor, or at the very least you will have a black screen after starting the game. ;)

My monitor is a ViewSonic G22fb

It is not LCD

It has the latest drivers

I run my desktop at 1940x1440 @ 60Hz

I run all my games at 1600x1200 @ 85Hz
