Is there any reward for capturing/dispersing a minor civ? Do you get the city?

Philly,
I'm spending a lot of time attempting to disperse a hostile city-state, but now I'm thinking, what's the point? Do I get the city, or any other benefit? I'd be better off just befriending them, or defending against them when they sporadically come near my city. Am I missing something? Is it just XP farming for my commander?

You also get a lump sum chunk of experience which, unlike combat experience that can be had by any general within its zone of control, in my experience looks to get divided among all the generals. So, if you get 24XP for dispersing a given CS and have 1 commander it will get 24XP. If you send 4 commanders, each gets only 6XP.

You also potentially prevent an AI opponent from suzeraining them.

I feel if you have the influence, and they're not taking land that you really need, some of those suzerain bonuses are pretty hefty. But definitely if they're taking up a valuable spot, it can be worth it to kill them. Especially some of those distant lands ones, easily can be in a spot where you could settle and get a couple treasure resources, those are always worth taking out.

I think that the yield rewards for dispersing an independent power are too small. It’s not that significant.

You save a lot of influence, get yields, and open up the map for settling in optimal location. If their placement is optimal, I often will befriend them and incorporate. But it is expensive on influence.

If the Village spot is good with nearby Resources, I like to promote their growth for the time of the incorporation action, but that's even more Influence for something like 2 more Population.
Also I should test it more, but I've got a new IP Village spawn at turn 39, not long after incorporating one (last time the incorporation was done just at last turn of the age, so I didn't get to notice it).

In Antiquity, I'll befriend IPs for suzerain bonuses usually, maybe incorporate later if it's a good spot and I've got the influence for it.

In Exploration, I'll scout out IPs that have treasure resources within their range, and befriend + incorporate them ASAP, which is actually competitive with sending over a Settler in terms of the time it takes, in particular if they're already Friendly.

Wrt for getting the city, you do get the city if it has been suzerained/become a city-state. No option to disperse it besides razing it (which'll give you that -1 war support).

I've been mostly playing on Sovereign so the AI is probably letting me get away with a lot, but it's super nice to line up a science IP and a culture IP for the free tech/civic per suze, then suze a bunch of IPs :)

I also like this combo :king:

The downside is that it eats up your influence.

If you're playing a peaceful game, you also do get a diplo bonus to civs who were close enough to the dispersed IP. I haven't figured out exactly what the range is for that, but IIRC it's gives something like +10 to relations
