Is there some way to turn off grinding?

Personally, I'm fine with not really caring about the mementos. To me they're almost more like a handicap, or like an alt game mode. My current game I slotted in one that gave Commanders an extra movement point, because that felt like it should be a base game feature I feel they're better with a little more movement. I haven't tried out any of the others, and don't even know what those unlocks actually are, and don't overly care.

The game doesn't need grind mechanics.

Good thing it doesn't have any, then.
Grinding: Grinding is a term within video game culture that describes time spent in the game in which a player repeats a general task in order to gain rewards like in-game currency, in-game experience, player stats or other reward types.

Repeatedly having to play a leader to gain xp and unlock rewards...sounds like grinding to me.

By this logic an achievement for playing X hours is also grind.

Heck, according to that definition even Steam's 'hours played' is grind, as it's a player stat.

The unlocking civs part seems mostly a poor ui/information issue, which is exacerbated by the fact that i just got a mod negate it fully so i haven't spent time looking into how it all worked as i just prefer the flat open choice. This sort of core stuff should be obvious.

This is obviously using pedantic semantics to take it to the extreme of silliness. Doing something when you otherwise would not to specifically gain a specific reward, is a grind.

Then the issue is that you're doing you wouldn't otherwise be doing.

If you were to read the dev diary on mementos, they very clearly state that the point of them is not to chase rewards, but rather to have a tangible way to track the progress you're making through normal playing.

And again, you can just not use mementos at all. I don't.

IMHO, what we seem to be discussing here is more of a personality trait, or an addiction, not a flaw with the game itself. This isn’t a traditional grind. This is like “grinding” for a platinum trophy in a PlayStation game. It’s completely a self-inflicted injury, not a flaw in the game.

Why on earth would someone min/max their gameplay to earn these? Why would someone straight up use a cheat to unlock them? Imagine using a hack on the Civ 6 hall of fame to give yourself the top score, or to mark every Civ as having won every victory just so their icons are marked. Its bizarre.

There's a very simple way to turn off the supposed grinding in Civ 7. Just... don't do it. If you don't want to play a certain leader, then don't. If you don't want to play a leader multiple times, then don't. Nobody is forcing you to use the memento system if you don't want to. You can even turn off mementos.

The point of the memento system is that they know a lot of players are going to put in hundreds to thousands of hours in the game over the next decade plus and want to have a little reward for a lot of players doing something they naturally will do. If it's not something you'd normally do, then you don't have to. The mementos are completely optional. It's that simple.

You can simply... not use the mementos and ignore the XP system entirely. The only thing the XP unlocks give is the optional artifacts that you select at the start of the game.

I mean, I could see at some level if Civ was a massive multiplayer game, and you needed all the mementos to compete in the Civ World Cup. But for a mostly solo player game where most people who play multi-player probably disable mementos anyways, you can easily ignore them.

Not entirely true. The progression also unlocks cosmetics for your profile and an optional point on the leader attribute path for that leader for their attribute trait paths.

The mementos are certainly powerful and interesting enough that I wouldn't recommend simply ignoring them, because you'll miss out on some fun strategies. They tend to synergize well for the leader that unlocked it.

But at the same time, it doesn't feel grindy to me. I unlocked some cool ones after playing through just 1 game with the respective leader. It's just not a big deal

How? The button that shows the Unlock Interface is not hidden or unclear I literally have zero idea how you managed to miss it. You cant blame missing one of five interface function buttons on poor ui.

The issue is that those strategies don't tend to be fun for me, as I stop having fun when I get too far ahead of the AI, and I'm only barely on the right side of that line when playing a strong civ without mementos on Deity.

But I might start using them if the AI also gets access to mementos, which they said they were considering implementing.

It's hidden during your first playthrough until you've had an age transition. He said he downloaded the mod after the first transition.

So this is a mixture of bad UI design and impatience on OP's part.

It's not hidden for me, it never was. That's hella weird.

I can confirm that it was hidden for me only during the very first Antiquity playthrough. No idea why, and whether it got fixed in recent patches.
Control question - were you forced into Antiquity first playthrough? As in the game automatically selected it and then you could not switch to the other Ages to start later on first playtrough?

Sadly, not something I can recall/verify at this point. I never planned to start from any age other than Antiquity, so seeing it selected during the setup didn’t make me want to tinker with age selection any further.

1) I've not played the first time I've launched the game, but I had visited the "new game" creation with only Antiquity. But I needed to see Exploration and Modern Civs as well from an advanced start game creation in order to list all the "Recommended Choices" Civs for each Leader, so I'd quit the game, I don't remember if I had actually started a new save or not.
2) Second time I've launch the game, the other 2 ages were available, so I've done my business, and then started a new game in Antiquity. No Unlock screen in Antiquity age. Tutorial on.
3) I thought I had a bug with my Leader's ability, so I started a new one. Still no Unlock screen, only appeared in Exploration age, still Tutorial on.
4) Now I've downloaded the Game of the Month save, and start it, I've still not the Unlock screen available, still Tutorial on.
