Is there still people playing civ 4?

^^^ +1 to Phil

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Civ V alpha was made public well over a year ago, and the public beta came out recently.
Really? I heard that it was the alpha of civ rev 2, and that someone had made an unforgivable typo in the name :aargh:
Maybe they'll fix it in the next named patch that players will need to pay for!

There is actually more Civ4 players then Civ5 players in single player , not much people play Civ4 multiplayer now, but there is thousands of people who still playing Civ4 single player

 It's corny, but I just had to do this.

" Teach a man to Civ 5 and you will please him for a day. Teach a man to Civ 4 and you will please him for a lifetime."

No, Civ 5 never appeared .... I'm still waiting .... ;) Guys are probably saying that Civ "5" You have in mind is an unworthy succesor (just an usurper ;P) to Civ 4 ;) We're still waiting for a worthy succesor hehe ;)

I wonder if there will ever be a new version of the game that follows the IV model. If a decision was made to keep it simple to attract new players and a wider audience there may never be another "complex and difficult" edition. Or does someone have some information to the contrary?

I don't quite get this argument. The complexity in Civ IV comes from the strategic depth of decision making, not from the complexity of rules or from abstract game design. Especially if you think about Vanilla it's sure no more difficult to get how to play Civ IV than Civ V. Winning Civ IV on settler is no more difficult than winning Civ V. But it's much more difficult to master Civ IV in the higher difficulty levels. So taking strategic complexity and depth of decision making out of the game does not really attract that many new players - but discourages the established fanbase. This whole streamlining issue from my point of view ist just a marketing ploy to camouflage reduced production budget and reduced testing and QA efforts...

Haha. Civ5 has better graphics, but it has that stupid 1upt rule.

Just asking, is there anyone who still plays Civ IV, or is it just me??

Of course, not only I still play civ4, I play some of civ3 scenarios and mods ( beside playing civ5). All these games are great regardless of their problems.

Actually? And this is based on what? Anyway, I doubt this to be true.

 Relax its a joke, though its sadly much closer to the truth than I would have liked :p
I suppose forgetting to place the question mark I've now editing in may have made it less clear, but I would have thought the term 'named patch' and quoting of a post mocking civ 5 would have raised questions on the seriousness.

How about Mods, any good ones?

There are plenty of them just check out the Civ4 download section ;)

As a long term Civ player since the early 90's I fondly remember Civ2's Fantastic Worlds expansion where the basic Civ2 engine was modded into all sorts of weird and wonderful permutations.

Out of the one's I've played for Civ4 I would recommend:-

Earth 2010 by Barbarian King http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=15619 Because you know you want to play a game where you get to use all those modern warfare units and extra units like the F22, Eurofighter, T-55 etc in a scenario that is pretty close to the modern day situation.

Planetfall by Maniac http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=252829 Because you know you want to play a game that continues the Civ experience once the colonists land on Alpha Centauri and the colonists have split into factions fighting over the new planet. Or possibly you're like me and old enough to have played Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri and want to do that with the Civ4 engine.

Mars Now by The_J http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=312246 for similar reasons to the above but this time involving the colonization of Mars.

Fall From Heaven 2 by Kael http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=1 Because you have a passing interest in sword and sorcery fantasy games/literature and you've always fancied playing the orcs and screaming, 'The Age of Man is over. The Age of the Orc has BEGUN!!!' Whilst you snowball your way to a conquest victory with a load of fireball throwing orc mages.

So yeah, there are some very, very good mods for Civ4.

Is (note: should be Are) there still people playing civ 4?

What be this "civ 4" ye be talkin' about? :dubious:

Is that the one with strategic depth, great mods, and excellent game play, which was followed by a travesty of a sequel that was released in pre-alpha?

I've only heard rumors about it, but it sounds a lot like this fun game that I play... ;)

New isn't always better looool

civ5 like most successions to previous games in the last 2 years have been blow outs. Take a look at SC2, diablo3, DotA copy-cats, smashbrawl, gunz2,age of empire3, ragnarok 2.... blah blah

i can go on forever, you'll find that they all lack gameplay depth and the game developers are trying to appeal to the 90% casual gamer community for more $$$, not the 10% competitive gamers looking for a game that requires more then a couple days practice to be high-level at.

yes I've been playnig civ since I was 13, this is my oldest forum account in the internet and I'm still here.

I thought SC2 was pretty good? And DotA copy-cats are just what you need if looking for some cruel uber-pro action. How can this being compared to CiV?

It's just you

What he said. Everyone else you see on the forums just posts here to make it look like there's people still playing. :mischief:

So yeah, I'm going to play CIV IV since I'm bored with CIV III.

If you haven't looked at them yet, you might find some of the many CivIII mods on this forum interesting. The Civ3 creation forum is here, and there are also some download database pages that might be interesting to peruse.

Yeah, it's perfidious! Incredible how far some crazy CiV haters go to make the game look bad...

I switched back to Civ 4 after giving up on Civ 5. Honestly, I respect Civ 4 more now that I have seen how bad it can get with Civ 5. Rediscovering micro management of cities was loads of fun.

Hey Firaxis: Give me the name of any other game where a significant number of the base customers switched BACK to a prior version of the product - one that is 5 years older? As much as I griped each time a new version came out, I eventually learned to love it and never thought about switching back. Not true with Civ 5. The more I played, the angrier I got.

Civ 5 is the New Coke of strategy gaming.

And I think they know it. Here is the lead designer after he left:
