Is this patch problem a Windows Thing??

From my understanding, it's far more a problem dealing with XP then with any other OS.

XP is, after all, a new OS, and with it, comes new OS headaches. Naysayers about how great XP is or will be aside, it's still NEW, and by that very statement, that's all you have to say. There is a price to be paid with any new OS... I'm sure XP will be great in time, but for now, occasional misteps are not only going to happen, they should be expected.

I've NEVER had problems with 98SE, so long as you keep it optimized, and know how to keep the system running smooth, 98SE is actually stable (never crashes on me, of course, I keep it as optimized as heck). ME is only a dumbed-down version of 98SE, so it's basically just as stable as 98SE.

XP is based on Win2000/NT, and those platforms have never been great for gaming... is it more compatible with games than the prior versions? Yes, but it can't be 100% compatible than the totally differant kernal (the 95/98/Me kernal).

Sorry to disagree with you, but from my experience of programming Windows applications (since Windows 3.1), NT, 2000 and now XP are far better for programming. There are far fewer limits, and they are much more robust than Win 95, 98 and ME.

I think the problem was probably caused by differences in API calls between the operating systems. It's unfortunately very easy to write code that will work on one OS, but fail on another.

Yeah people who dont know what they are talking about need to keep their opions to themselves. Win 98 is a pretty good OS. it still has some major issues though, number one is its dated and doesnt work well with lots of modern devices, Like Digital aydio and some Waccom pads, ect. Win ME has something stange with its file system its not very stable. If you are moveing tons of files Installing uninstalling,Dessigning sending and deleteing. WinMe needs to b e reformatted every 3 months under extreme conditions. Its very good for a home user but not in the buis world. I didnt use 2000 because it was far too buggy when it came out, at aleast for me, nothing worked with out a 2k patch and companies were slow to get them out, which brought me to XP. I have never had a single problem with XP, ALL of my hardware rand on it out the box without me installing anydrivers period, and ran perfectly it did. Every single game I have installed runs perfectly. Currently there id Q3 arena,The Sims and The Hotdate Expansion,Sim City 3000 U,UT,RTCW,Black and White,Quake 2, and then this buggy Civ3 .Thast Just the games, I run Photoshop, A waccom Pad,Golive,3d studio max,Maya, and tons and tons of other apps, and various things for other games and programs, Out of all that, ONLY civ 3 does not works, Others were buggy, but the patches all fixed the problems. So dont blame it on the newness of the OS I think it seems to go to Fireaxis Incopmitence more.

Thanks Dillo for being the judge of who does and doesn't know what they're talking about... I'm sure you're a freakin' genius.

I do have A+ certification, and I have been building systems from scratch routinely for the past 10 years... I have dealt with everything from DOS 5.0 to Windows XP, so I think I'm entitled to an opinion.

Of course, your so damn smart, you hold the sway in who should or shouldn't speak.
