Ok I want to know whether this canal system would work:

currently the lake underneath nicaea is connected by two forts (both by the water) to the Sea next to constantinople and then the sea near constantinople is connected to the ocean by thessalonica (Yellow line on diagram). I want to connect the lake underneath Nicaea to the ocean to the west (via the purple line) is this possible? (because if it is it would make travelling from constantinople heading west easier because you don't have to navigate the south of the continent)

Or will it only work if the forts in question are all connected to the sea? (i.e as the two forts are both on the coast in the picture)

p.s. canals are a great way to make use of desert tiles aren't they!

I'd expect forts/cities would have to border water to act as harbors and building a line of forts across a continent would in fact not work.

im going to world builder it :) just to see if it would work

Purple does not work.

For the forts or cities being able to house naval units, they have to be next to a water body. Purple has a tile that does not fulfill that.

Yeah it's a shame, that continent's just a bit too thick to make a canal through. At least you own the waters round the south passage though.

Is Ankara working unimproved tiles? ;)

well I worked this little problem out there is room for a canal to the south so I made it there saving 4 turns of travel (by galleon) and I wasn't quite ready to improve ankara yet... :D

(the new canal in using the lake by ankara one fort to the south and one to the north-west)

I wonder, if you settled a city between those mountains, would you be able to form a canal along the purple line?

No. Cities = forts for canal purposes. For a boat to enter it, at least one border tile must be water (water under ice is OK).

I hadn't had ankara for long but I agree it was pretty stupid.... Btw I won by diplomatic victory genghis voted for me and gave me just enough votes to win

after killing mansa...

I loved that map it was pretty cool although I didn't like that the agean was just to big to be a lake so
1.I thought it was the ocean when I first founded there
2.couldn't build farms on it...
