Isn't anyone bothered by the humor in Civ4 and 3?

Civ3 had a really unserious tone throughout the game when it came to dialogue with the other civs and recommendations from advisors. Based on the walkthrough, Civ4 will have it as well. I mean Caesar saying "care for a sallad? I made it myself" and Ghandi saying something like "We respect all our neighbors, even the really annoying ones like you!" doesn't exactly give it the feel of an epic, historical experience.

It doesn't bother me personally, but I'm surprised I've never seen anyone complain about it, ever. Surely there must be SOMEONE who wants 100% seriousness throughout the game and who is highly offended by what Sid has done, thus boycotting the game using it as a valid excuse to play it for free instead?

Civ and Civ 2 had humor throughout as well. It's just part of the gaming experience. Never bothered me.

It did? I don't remember it. I guess I was just too young and dumb to get it back then.

what we know of the historical figures is what they wanted us to think. Im sure all the presidents said %$#& but we dont know that. Country leaders dont talk to others using "speech language", i think a bit of humor is always welcomed.

I loved it. I felt that it made the game quite a bit more enjoyable than a stuffy EU II kind of atmosphere would have.

I love the humor, everything from the advisors in civ2 to all the easter eggs. Civ is able to pull this off and still maintain a degree of seriousness. When I saw the "want some salad? I made it myself" screen, I literally cracked up.

It's a game, so it's good to have some laughs in it! Even Caesar talking about his salad won't bother me but'll make me smile! :) (seen it in Sullla Walkthrough)

First of all, thanks for starting a thread that isn't about anticipation, disappointment, or frustration with regards to the release, but is about a genuine discussion about the game. (not that I am innocent of going psycho until I get my hands on it).

Anyway, I actually have sometimes been a little miffed at the humor. I just ignored it and didn't pay attention. I like that the game seems lighthearted, but as a history buff, I think it's a fine line between being a silly and irritating cartoonish game and something more serious and attempting to be realistic. After all, isn't that what civ is about, reliving history. There is nothing wrong with it being a little light hearted, but what you have quoted does seem to go over the top into goofiness that may distract from the gameplay.

Not me. I love the light-hearted tone.

How can you take a game seriously that is clearly influenced heavily by the Church of Elvis?

Well I guess if SOMEONE doesn't like them, they can mod what the A.I. civs will say on greeting you. I did this a little bit with Civ3 however I could never post any of those changes here. I would be banned instantly

Personally, I think if the AI says something stupid, it adds flavour to the game. I love that line when greeting a civ in CivIV: ... your head on a pole... Excellent way to greet someone you dont like

True, EUII was definitely stuffy...again...it's a fine line though...like Monty Python...I love it because I know they know the real history and feel, that's what makes their stuff so funny, b/c the humor is so smart.;)

I for one am outraged by their degeneration of history. It is appalling to lower caesar into a servile nut. what were they thinking? If I ever see sid in real life, I will throw a history textbook at his head!

Hail to the king :king:

i can live with the AI doing some silly things..but i absoulutly hate the humor in the buildings..like in civ3 the wonders were really dumb..like heroic epic...a book with a picture of a goofy looking bull on it...and the magellans quest...a play structure...keep the humor in the AI...but not in the buildings.... a wonder is supposed be great and awsome....you wouldnt know it by looking at the cracker barrel...i mean adam smiths trading company...keep the dialogue....loose the graphic comedy

I love all Civ's humor, from 1 to 4! I hope Sid & company just keep comming with such good and funny stuff!
