IsrNES: Beresheet, In the Begining

Lu are too smart for that, they are "barbarians" themselves (you should know that in reality the peninsula wasn't actually "civilized" for quite a while). Maybe I will do that with one of the more "civilized" Chinese nations. When I saw you had posted, I thought you were going to rant on to me from when I hinted before that the southern Chinese were not all that civilized and did not really differentiate them from the other Chinese.

Orders sent.

Question: Can you please clear up the economy system. I had quite big trouble finding out exactly what I can and can't spend on.

Army/Navy: 1 point to grow
Education: 6 points to grow
Economy: various points to grow (5 needed in my case)
UU: ?
Research: ?
Infrastructure: ?
Expansion/setting up colonies: ?
Confidence: Stories only?
Culture: Can't be invested in.

I really think it needs tightening up as it makes sending detailed orders and making detailed plans quite a hassle. In my orders I needed to make guesses in some places as to cost of things and then put in instructions for what to do in case I guess wrong. It's just... very annoying. So, I would really appreciate it if some work was done there on a "pricelist".

As it is it seems its mainly only possible to invest in military and economic growth which just doesn't seem right.

From: Marseilles
To: Rome and Carthage

We are saddened to see continued warfare between you. We would like to repeat our offer of mediating between you in an attempt to settle this before trade is disrupted too badly.
In addition we would like to sign a treaty between you and us promising no aggression and no declarations of war (NAP) for a period of 300 years (3 turns).

1. "Research" is not a stat in this NES, so I don't know where you are getting it
2. The reson you are probably confused is you ahve not really played in other NESes, if you had you would better understand the general system
3. UU advances at 10% of your ARMY per eco point
4. Expansion costs nothing
5. Infastructure costs nothing for now, but that might change
6. Confidence can only be increased through stories, random events, and good stategy
7. The reason you can spend your eco only on military, economy, and education is that I want this NES to be more about good strategy than who has the most eco points

OKay I'm almost ready to rejoin if my nation still survives.....

@Lord Iggy- Well, yus, but many of them don't succeed because people see things from the way Harleqin did. Even though he has sent very good orders with very detailed strategy, he has fallen into the trap of thinking just because you have more eco you will be more successful. That won't happen in my NES.

@Gelion- I am not going to cause your little nation to disapear. It is beyond the fringes of civilization and I would havew no reason to kill it. Also, I wouldn't eliminate a temporary NPC nation just like I wouldn't eliminate a PC nation unless another PC did it for me.

Cool, then I shall write stories!

I can't figure out if I've just been insulted :scan:

I'm trying to build a base for protection and the betterment of my people. The area shown in my orders is actually what I consider as the limit of my territorial ambition for this age as it would otherwise become too unwieldy and too difficult to govern.

We need an update! We've been waiting for 2 weeks already, don't make us wait any more!! :(

THE LAW OF EPITADEUS
-or-
How democratic leanings desappeared from Sparta for good, part II

***

After Lycidius had taken over the throne of Sparta, the only "democratic" institution that was left in Sparta was the apella, a citizen's assembly that gathered together every now and then. After the double monarchy collapsed in 1799 B.C., the assembly had only one mission left: to elect a new king when the old one would die.

Lycidius was brutally murdered in 1783 B.C., right in the middle of bulking up the Spartan army. The "left side" of the assembly - bunch of radical pro-democrats - were behind this action, hoping to get a pro-democrat elected as king. Unfortunately for them, they lost all their popularity in the assembly of 1483 B.C. and Lycidius's rich cousin, Epitadeus (r. 1783-1740 B.C.) basically bought the position of the king.

King Epitadeus was far from being a democrat. He held a new assembly just year after becoming the king, and brought 1000 soldiers into the apella meeting.

"Let it be known", he declared, "that from this day onwards, the apella is no more! From now on, the position of a king will inherit from father to son!"

Nobody dared to question this decision. Still, just to be on the safe side, all those nobles who were known to be pro-democrat disappeared. It is not known wether they were killed or driven to exile, but they were never seen again in Sparta.

And those nobles who were left? They were all given powerful governmental offices, to ensure their loyalty.

And so, even the slightest hints of democracy were now gone in Sparta, and Epitadeus and his family had the power. The destruction of Apella was needed, because after the assasination of Lycidius, it would not have been possible to maintain strong hold over the land without fear of noble rebellions. In this sense, Epitadeus made several new laws, making Sparta a stiff militaristic society: all males had to survive a week in the wilderness with nothing but their wits with them at the age of 13. At the age of 20, their army service would begin, and it would last for 10 years, until at the age of 30 they would become Spartan citizens. The nobles would work as officers and as supervisors who would ensure the efficiency of the army.

At the same time, Epitadeus was preparing himself for the Peloponnesian War - which was part of the reason why these strickt law codes were required.

OOC: Israelite, I'd appreciate it if you would change my nation template a bit. For instance, it's no longer run by an NPC ;), and also (as according to my story) I'd like the double monarchy with democratic leanings turn into a despotic monarchy with absolutely no democratic leanings at all!

@Everyone- Sorry for the delay. I just returned from my cousin's bris and my other cousin's naming (my aunt fust had twins, yippee!). Update will be tommorrow, Christmas break starts for me tommorrow.
@Harleqin- You weren't insulted. I used you as an example, but many people do this. You have actually not done this as much as others.

Two things about the update:
1. Upper Egypt's color has been changed so that non-capital cities show up better.
2. I have changed the population stat. The idea is based on one that was posted posted by someone else, I think Harelqin, but I am not sure who. Anyways, the idea is that instead of a large number representing your whole population, you have two levels represented by two numbers. The first is your population in relation to surounding nations, the second in realtion to nation through history. Read the section on military in the rules to find out how this affects recruitment.

Update 3: 1750 BCE
1972 Hebraic Calendar

G-d said to Moses, “How long will this nation continue to provoke Me?....I will kill them with a plague and annihilate them.”
- Sh’lach (Numbers) 74:14:11….Sh’lach (Numbers) 74:14:12

War rages on throughout the world. The war in China continues unabated, seeing as the Lu generals received no orders to go by (Fantasmo sent no orders). The Africans have tasted blood in the Ethiopian war between Addis Ababa and Aksum. Further north the Mediterranean runs red as the western half is filled with the sounds of the Punic War and the eastern half with that of the Peloponnesian War. At the same time barbarian pressure causes large swathes of Thrace, Kush (no orders from irish lad), and Noko (no orders from Kentharu) to be swallowed up. In the end, possibly the only bright spot may be the Egyptian War, which has come to an end.

Meanwhile, the Horse Plague as it is being called seems to be in its last throws. Before dying out, it is expected to make one last burst and then fade away. At the same time the Upper Egyptians have benefited from the finding of unique breed of horse. A crossbreed between a particular kind of imported Arabic horse and a particular kind of zebra found only within the region, the breed has been perfected with the dilution of its blood by the addition of more horse blood. The Upper Egyptians see this as a blessing from the gods and quickly take advantage of it in battle against the Egyptrans.

The Mediterranean wars have spurred on a Renaissance in pan-Punic shipbuilding. Both the Phoenicians and Carthaginians have developed new styles of ships. The Carthaginians have favored a broader ship excellent for destroying the enemies’ ships while the Phoenicians have favored a longer ship, designed for speed and long distance travel.

The bloodiest of all of the current wars is the Punic War. Turning the western Mediterranean Sea red, the main fighting has been in the isles of the Mediterranean. This, of course, has been due mainly to Carthaginian naval supremacy. In a stunningly brilliant move, the Romans led a small shipment of troops to the island of Sicily to assist the people in their rebellion. The western half has now secede d from Carthage to form The Sicilian Republic. At the same time, a tactically sound move by the Romans was thwarted by seemingly mere chance. The Romans had sent ships to surround, besiege, and take the island of Sardinia. The even managed to block off the island so that no news could reach the capital of the situation. Unfortunately for them, at the same time the Berber allies of Carthage were taking the same route towards Italy. The Romans were driven off by the Berbers and a well informed Carthaginian garrison. The Romans did, however, take Corsica. The Berbers went on to seize Tuscany from the Romans and found the Berber Kingdom of Tuscany. Out of everyone, this has actually benefited the Punics of Marseilles the most, for they now have yet another trading partner to add to their long list.

In the west another bloodbath ensues in Greece with most of Athens having fallen to the combined armies of Sparta and Macedon. Between the two of them the former glory of Athens is now divided between the Macedonian north, the Spartan south, and the Athenian city. Athens itself could fall any day, the only reason it has yet to are the cunning maneuvering of the Athenian navy to allow meager supplies of food to reach the city.

In Africa the warriors of Addis Ababa have raided and invaded Aksum. They have captured the Aksumite bank of the Blue Nile and their reach extended further at one point, but they were quickly driven back. The king, with great greed, sought to enslave the population of Aksum, now a choice easily seen as very bad. The Aksumites already had the Israelites as trusted allies, brothers in faith and royal blood as they are. Unfortunately for Addis Ababa, they also managed to lure the much closer Sabaens onto their side. With decently sized Jewish and Ethiopian populations, they were put under enough pressure by their people to come to Aksum’s aid. While the Addis Ababans are more than powerful enough to handle Aksum on its own, a strong alliance may be more than it can chew.

While the more civilized nations flexed there muscles, the “barbarians” have risen up, at least in some places. They have overrun the best parts of Kush and Thrace and driven the Yoruba to secede from Noko. The barbarians have gotten a good taste of civilization’s wealth, and they seem ready to come back for seconds.

At the same time as all of these wars have picked up speed, the Egyptian War has come to a dead halt. With rather quiet ease, the Upper Egyptians have united the bounty of the Nile valley and brought harmony to Egypt, sort of. Despite his success and the reverence he receives in his homeland, the Pharaoh is frowned down upon by the Lower Egyptians. They also disprove of the capital being so far south when even many of the Upper Egyptians could handle it being in for Egyptran territory, as long as that spot wasn’t too far north. In the end, the name may be the thing that bothers the metropolitan and settled Lower Egyptians the most. If the country is now unified, why call it “Upper Egypt” and not just “Egypt”? The grumblings have been getting louder and if the Pharaoh doesn’t do something soon, then he might find himself going down river again, this time to reunite a broken nation.

In the end possibly the most prosperous nation of this half century would be Marseilles, although Teutonia and Phoenicia both present reasonable challenges. Marseilles has smoothly transitioned from monarchy to republic and equally smoothly dealt with race relations between Phoenicians and Celts. She has created a trade network across the north of the eastern Mediterranean and established colonial ports from the mouth of the Po to the mouth of the Ebro. At the same time she has reached with welcoming arms to the Germanic Teutons, the religious leaders of the era, to her north, while peacefully distancing herself from Phoenicia, and yet diplomatically not completely cutting herself off. Marseilles is the greatest nation of this half century.

Map. I'm too lazy right now to think up more than that.

Fantastic update :) Time to start consolidating I think. The traderoute between me and the Teutons is it just to mark a road, small trade or is a full +1 traderoute as none of our nations has it listed? :)

Orders by Friday?
