Right before i joined this forum i didn't know much about civ2 so i was in about 1700AD and still had depotism, so after reading these threads, i decided to switch to democracy, a couple turns later i lost about 25 units through cities disbanding them, so i restarted from where it was last saved and switched to republic but the same happened, what could i do to stop this.

Either disaband them yourself or re-home them from different cities.Or use a different government form like Commie or Fundy

Democracy or Republic need some preparation.Units require support under thoses governements as well as causing unhappiness..

One techinique for a Democratic military is to build a city with resources nearby that will yeild large amounts of "sheilds"(buffalos, iron, coal etc)
Build Shake's Theatre in this city.Maybe King Richard's.Then re-home all units thru that city.

You really need to be out of Despot much earlier.Make Monarchy an early priority

I cant disband them as they are quite nessecary as i am currently fighting a war, i now realise that i should of changed government earlier, most of the units i disband seem to be out of the city, if i sent them all home first would that stop them being disbanded, because i currently don't have the funds avaliable to just build a city with these wonders just to save my units.

Or if i were to switch to monarchy 1st and stay with that for a while would that save my units?

Smash,
Welcome back ;)

Shycho,
Please, switch to Monarchy at once (you should have done that many centuries ago). Then try to get Communism and switch to Commie (which works like a much improved Monarchy).
Republic and Democracy both are very good governments (especially because of their ability to grow through WLTLD), but managing them when at war requires some training (that you will acquire if you go on playing and asking for advice here).

hey, just switch to fundamentalism. I are betting my life that you will never have that problem again.

Would it not be an advantage to switch to commie since a war is going on?

Perhaps you should postpone your war (i.e. make peace) and use the interval before your next war to get your affairs in order.

What technology do you have, how many cities and are you more powerful than your enemies?

^ Thats important to know :).
I say switch to either Fundamentalism or Communism, but that again depends on your development....and the enemies.

I'd always go with Fundamentalism while at war because of the unit support and ability to build infinite Finatics without having to support them. Of course, communism has it's advantages (like your science won't drop dramatically).

^ Under totalitarian govt you don't make science - you steal science :). And if someone has a problem with that....you wipe them out .

i have about 15 cities, cant remember the sizes right now only about size 12 at the max, but i have the russians on my island which is quite big, i make peace but then 2 turns later they are at war with me no matter how many times i make peace.

If your tech and production allowes you - wipe them out. "Two bears in one cave  "...

I have very few problems with sneak attacks. I think I've either intimidated my enemies enough, or I have the UN and Eiffel Tower (that helps a lot!).

I never seem to get to the point where the fools don't attack, but I make sure I get the UN first if at all possible.

One of the days I will play an entire game at peace and it will probably be boring. At least getting attacked may be teaching me some things about attacking, at least I hope so.

Try a One City Challenge - focus on avoiding war (occasionally goading the AI into fighting each other) in order to develop and win the spaceship race. The pre-AD1 Wonder race is sometimes nail-biting...

The space race can get tight at the end too. (And there's always the possibility that some AI will not take a liking to you and will force you into a war to protect your city)

Another alternative (not OCC) - You can play peace for an extended period while you build-up to a bigger, larger-scale war at the end.

To make sure I am understanding. You only build one city? How can you win? It seems you would be constantly behind in everything and could be wiped out by the AI with ease.

You choose your one city site with care, looking for high-trade specials, grass and rivers if possible, and access to the ocean or a nearby AI civ for trade routes. You stay small and peaceful at first, building key wonders (Colossus, Copernicus, Shakespeare, and Newtons, with Hanging Gardens, Marco Polo, and King Rich if appropriate) and improvements to increase your research rate. Once Shakes goes in you set high Lux rates and swell your city into the 20s or 30s and focus everything on research. Alliances and KeyCiv tech gifting keep research costs down, and occasional caravan/freight deliveries get you to a tech every turn or two.

Usually you are playing to win by spaceship. It is much harder to accomplish in MGE than Classic, due to AI hostility, but it still can be done. I've only won a couple times via conquest, which has to be done as quickly as possible before the AI gets too powerful. In that kind of game you get PolyTheism, MapMaking and Sanitation quickly, then shut down research and build an army of around 2 dozen units to take the AI civs out one by one. Large maps are a problem for OCC Conquest, as is Restarts On. You cannot blanket the world with cities or units (but you can buy AI&Barb units to become NONEs, in addition to Hut mercenaries).

Nothing teaches you about the "other" (non-conquest) side of Civ like OCC...
