But it crashes when configuring the scenario. I get this message:
and others too.

Is this a problem that can be corrected in the Editor? Or have I simply not installed into the correct folders? Or what is the problem?

you must have installed something incorrectly, as i do not get that error message, and no one else has reported it. but thats a bizzarre message to get. has anyone els gotten this error?

I also get an error screen with missing Crossbowman.flcs - has this something to do with the Norman Knight problem you wrote about? And how do I fix that?

I am sorry to disappoint you. Although this scenario looks nice, at this stage, v 2.231, it is not really ready for use. I thought it was a quick fix, so I started to correct the problems one by one. To begin with, there is a space missing between Italy and 1400 in the path (btw, the ..\Scenario part is not needed). Once the path was ok, I looked at the contents of the crossbowman.ini file. It did not in any way correspond to the contents of the directory. One only has to link to replace lines
DEFAULT=CrossbowmanDefault.flc
with
DEFAULT=SwordmanDefault.flc
In fact, there is no need to re-distribute some of the files at all, and
RUN=BowmanRun.amb
can be replaced by
RUN=..\Bowman\BowmanRun.amb
with out any BowmanRun.amb file, and so on.
Just browsing, I also saw that the Italian_KnightLarge.pcx icon is actually called Itailian_KnightLarge.pcx, and does thus not correspond to the name in the PediaIcons.txt file. The build quque icons for the new units also tend to have very strange values. At this stage I decided that although I would like to play this scenario at some point, someone has to debug it first. :)

Hmmm...

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm not much good at debugging (rather the opposite, really), so I guess I'll have to wait. Damn, the Italian Renaissance was one of my main subjects in high school. I loved that.

If Johann debugs the scenario, could he maybe also make it possible to play some of the other city states? Florence, Milan, Rome...

OK, since you are so eager to play, I debugged it for you. As a neighbourly gesture. ;)

The following bugs were fixed
* scenario path
* unit .ini files
* PediaIcons.txt entries
* Galleass now has an AI strategy (otherwise none get built)

In addition, the CrusaderSmall icon was changed to have 8-bit color (as it should) instead of 24-bit, although this could have been done nicer to get the right background. I also set the map as visible. Exploring Italy in the 15th century might otherwise have appeared as a bug to some. :) Many redundant files were also removed, reducing the scenario size significantly.

The fixed version can be downloaded below

version 2.231 main files

version 2.231 units

Since I did not in any way change the contents of the scenario, I will not take any credit for these fixes. There is plenty left to do, such as getting the upgrade paths of the new units right...

Have fun!

You're welcome! :goodjob:
Actually, I already fixed the Mercenary Archer bug. ;) As to why it worked for you - I can't say. But I can guess. :) What happens when the game looks at the .ini file of a unit is that it looks for a file with the name indicated for that action in all directories in the path (at least the unit direcories of C3C, PTW, and Civ3) that have the same name as the one in which the .ini file resides. So, when you write
DEFAULT=CrossbowmanDefault.flc
and actually happen to have a CrossbowmanDefault.flc file in another directory that is called Crossbowman, that one will be activated. One would, however, expect some problems with the .amb files. They have .wav file names hardcoded, and these will not be found even if you have copied the .amb to your new directory. In the best case you just don't get any sound...
Whatever the reason I think that it might be a good idea to check that you don't have duplicate directories, and actually test the zipped files before posting...

I start it up and it sez its missing art\unti\knight\knightdeath.wav but iknight death is in its folder.

This is begenning to piss me off, I'm having the same problem with 4 of the Conquest scenarios with other files! :(

Well, you obviously didn't use the fixed version, since it does not contain any references to that file. :) I used the CrusaderDeath.wav for the Crusader and the ..\Horseman\HorsemanDeath.wav for the Italian Knight. But if you want a stable scenario, why not try The Rising Sun? ;)

EDIT: Johann, why not try to update some of the units in the new version you are preparing? For instance, you could use this opportunity to put in Bebro's beautiful
Teutonic Knight and Hospitaller Knight. I really had a hard time leaving out all of BeBro's and Balou's units of my scenario to get it down to a reasonable size... :undecide:

a teutonic Knight would be inacurate, but i do want tio use the Hospitaller, but until i get photoshop or someone makes a units 32 with it in it, im stuck.
but i still dont understand why there were problems with .inis since they worked for me.

I can make a units_32 file for you if you'd like me to. MS Photo Editor from Office works just fine. Tell me which build queue icons you want and I'll add them to the standard file. It will also be a little smaller that way. You had lots of stuff in there. :)
As to why it seemed to work for you, it is hard to say without looking at your installation. But does it really matter? Some of the files were not as they should be - and now they are. :)
When it comes to the Teutonic Knights, you might actually encounter some. Although their power peaked before the defeat of 1410, secular Prussia did not appear until after the reformation, which caused mass desertions in the ranks of the order. Finally, the High Master chose to call himself king in Prussia instead. :) They were thus the longest living of the orders. Of course, they might not have been in Italy very often. ;)

I have done the unit_32.pcx file for you (see attachment below). In addition to the seven units that you have now, I have also included some other icons:

1. Galleass. The one you use is actually for the Late Galleass, also by Colonel (Admiral) Kraken. This is, of course, also a nice unit...

2. & 3. BeBro's Teutonic Knight and Hospitaller (see above). I think that in style, the former look very much like the Crusader you have now, so it could be possible to use it as such and have the latter to replace the Italian Knight.

4. English Crossbowman by embryodead. Not that it is so English that it could not be used in Italy, of course. :)

5. Crossbowman by utahjazz77.

6. Hessish Knight by utahjazz77. Again, needs not really be Hessish. :) Looks cool, though.

The reason for the two crossbowmen is also that I now understand the transparent rectangle. It is a problem with the .flc files themselves. If you look at them in FLICster, the alpha blend doesn't work. I would definitely replace the crossbowman!

EDIT: attachment deleted

Hessiah Knight download URL isn't valid.

EDIT: sez I'm missing art\units\Roundshier\Roundshier.ini and art\untis\Galleass\Galleass.ini, I downloaded the latter file though from above.

I install something wrong?

I fixed the link above. As to the missing .ini files, they are where they should be, i.e. Italy 1400version2.2\Art\Units, and they tested fine before upload. You should check that you unzipped both files to the right directory: Civilization III\Conquests\Scenarios?

Been playing it a found that it randomly crashes, no file missing message, just crashes. Usually when I click on a city or unit.
