Many redundant files were also removed, reducing the scenario size significantly.
As to why it worked for you - I can't say. But I can guess.
What happens when the game looks at the .ini file of a unit is that it looks for a file with the name indicated for that action in all directories in the path (at least the unit direcories of C3C, PTW, and Civ3) that have the same name as the one in which the .ini file resides. So, when you write
I used the CrusaderDeath.wav for the Crusader and the ..\Horseman\HorsemanDeath.wav for the Italian Knight. But if you want a stable scenario, why not try The Rising Sun? 



They were thus the longest living of the orders. Of course, they might not have been in Italy very often. 

Looks cool, though.
