I signed a Mutual Protection Pact (sorry I don't know the vernacular yet), with the Americans late in the game. I think I'll win the space race in about 30 turns but I was worried I might lose the game before then if the United Nations was built. I don't know how the AI's decide to vote for so I figured if I was in an alliance with the American I'd have a better chance of getting their vote. (They were also the smallest player left so I wanted to make sure they didn't lose any cities to my rivals.

Anyway I managed to tick off the French enough for them to declare war on me. The war went well and I took over three small remote French Cities and one of their core Megatropolis cities. (which keeps flipping back but thats a different subject).

Anyway, to begin to bring my long long story to an end, my cities have all gone from WLTK to revolting. The French don't really have anything that I want to gain resource/Luxury that is close enough to my cities to make it worth while so I want to grant them peace. Unfortunately I feel like the Americans will get pounded if I do. In which case I'll feel guilty for getting them in a war and then signing a peace treaty.

Is there anyway I can get the American's to sign at the same time?

Or do I just forget the Americans maybe gift them a few small remote cities and grant the French peace?

yeah this is one of those problems with diplomacy in this game. no mediation. it sucks.
"surrender" would be nice too.

Unfortunately you can't get the American's to sign. If you make peace with the French, the Americans are gonna be mad at you.

The kicker, if you make peace with France while in an MPP, if France does any attacks on the Americans, you will be forced to re-declare, thusly trashing your reputation. That is one reason most Civ 3 players try to avoid that situation by avoiding that kind of deal.

You could always set up a good defense and and gift the americans some gold, techs, whatever. Enough support that they might be able to defend themselves. At lease until the alliance pact ends and you can then pull out with no penalty.

P.S. You should never feel guilty playing a game. They're just images generated by bits and pixels.

What is your government? Democracy?

Yes, I found that out the hard way. Oops and my reputation had been pretty clean before that.

I should chant that as my mantra, these aren't real people.

Republic.
I can't get the American's out of the war and I don't know how to cancel my MPP with them. Luckilly we are kicking the $#@@ out of France.

I don't think you can make the Americans sign a PT with France, but if you want to cancel the MPP, open up diplomacy with them. At the bottom of the diplo box, you'll see "New," and "Active." Click "Active" to open up any active deals, then click on the MPP. Everything else will vanish. Click on it again to get it out of the box. Viola! MPP cancelled. Just don't do it before the 20 turns has run.

Excellent thank you. I'm well past the 20 turns so should be fine there.

I sometimes feel guilty about my treatment of the AI.
Not when I betray them intentionally--that makes me feel satisfied
But if I accidentally break a deal (trade route cut, etc.,) I do feel sad about it.

This is exactly why I don't sign mutual protection pacts. I suggest you sign peace, then declare war on the Amerikans and crush them. I suspect that may alleviate relationship problems. Then after finishing America you crush France as well. Make sure to switch to Fascism however.
