It's almost released, time to talk about a SMAC full conversion

I think this is a better fit for SMAC than Civ IV. They rereleased Colonization with IV so why not SMAC with V.

The civic system in Civ4 fits SMAC better than the social policies in Civ5.

Yeah, if you want to clone SMAC, Civ4 would be better. That being said, if you want to create a new game based on SMAC (aka SMAC II), Civ5 would be fine as long as you think it through.

IIRC, rights to SMAC are split between EA and Firaxis, hence no new SMACs.

EA being reasonable?

HA HA HA

Of course I'd love to see a new SMAC, but EA's corporate executives wanted to see lots of money too. Maybe in distant future though, hopefully.

Geez, it's only a name. So you don't call it SMAC II, call it something else. Then again, it wasn't Sid Mier who made Civ II or SMAC so I guess that is why he can't call it something else, it's because he can't make the game as good.

I am surprised on much work Sid did. I was shocked to learn that Brian Renyolds was the actual brains behind Civ II and SMAC.

Make SMAC 2... EA won't care unless it actually becomes popular... then they will be quick to shut it down. Sucks tho, cuz part of what made SMAC so good was it's personalities. The leaders were awesome, the factions were amazingly well developed and the story was actually quite amazing, considering it was a TBS..

I had never heard about SMAC until right now and it seems really cool or like it would be a really sweet mod. But it got me thinking about something that would almost without a doubt be completely impossible but i love the idea of. A mod that perhaps speeds up tech learning a bit, once you build space ships you can travel to other worlds and begin to colonize there as well. Perhaps new winning conditions and AIs would be needed but i think it would be really cool to be able to expand past 1 planet although probably impossible.

Because it's the name which sells. No one would watch Late Night with Random Guy, while Late Night with Conan O'Brien is altogether a different matter. Same goes with game's names... Sid Meier sells, even if the game is designed by someone else.

I would support an SMAC total conversion, and it must not necessarily try to imitate it in all things... could have it's own civ5 like flavor. But it would surely look awesome if done right.

I wouldn't mind watching Late Night with a Random Guy.:mischief:

Yeah I guess you are correct. So the name does mean alot. So what would it take then for the game to be made? How come EA didn't bother using it then? Or is EA just too much into consoles, that if it will not sell on a console they will not bother with it?

Has EA made any games lately just for the PC?

My guess is that there are copyright issues on both sides that prevent them from making the game. Certainly, EA couldn't use the name "Sid Meier" without his permission, even if Firaxis is prohibited from making an "Alpha Centauri" game.

BTW, Alpha Centauri is a trinary star system. The stars are Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B, and Proxima Centauri. Proxima is the closest, however.

Unfortunately, they can't chance the name of the star system, since our Civ5 rockets are still being launched there.

Our very own Maniac's smac mod for civ 4 is at least on par with the original; try it on monday! And here's to hoping he will do it (planetfall) for civ 5!

Well, if anyone wants to help please join the subreddit. I'm really hoping for a communal effort on this. I would love to see a restyling of the game that will preserve the game's feel.

As for the social system's, I will have to see them in work, by I anticipate them being useful in a number of ways in a SMAC conversion.

And on a scientific note, Proxima Centauri is far too weak to light up a planet, even one orbiting the small red dwarf would probably be cold.

Do you have a link? I'm definitely interested to see what they did. I feel that a few minor cosmetic changes and a better AI would have made SMAC flawless, though. The video and audio parts of the game alone make it one of my favorite games of all time (hell, the opening scene does it for me).
