Joe-01

I know, JOE. :) That's one of the reasons I play SGs - they are invaluable learning experiences. And that's why I am pointing out these things about what I think is the right action to take. Not even so much to say, look, this is the "One True Way", but to spark discussion and see: hey, maybe someone thinks settling all those tiny islands is a very bad idea. Say so, and say why, I am always open to alternate strategies, for I definitely also still have a lot to learn about this game. :)

Also, RL is Real Life. :)

Vovan

Just to say, the reason I wouldn't have settled on the little islands would have been maintenance cost issues when we're about to go into battle, but I never thought of doing things like gold/pop rushing a courthouse to remove the costs.

Certainly learning a lot through starting this SG.

Thanks again.

Hmmmm...

With Perplexity and Temmage gone, I think we should put it to the vote as to whether the game is dead or not. It's a certainty we're going to win, so it's just whether we want to go through the motions and get to the end.

So vote "end" or "carry on".

JesusOnEez votes carry on
goreamon votes ?
vovan votes ?

temmage and perplexity are gone...

If you wanted to carry on, then we'd need a couple of players extra...so any lurkers who may be interested, wait until the voting is finished.

Steve

Definitely carry on. Three people is fine for an SG, just means the turns will get back to you faster. If you would like to avoid that, and if more players don't show up, you could increase the turn count to say 15, or 20, for now. Untill things get messy.

Vovan

OK. I'll just be REALLY brief this time around because I need to work now, but

I built Taj Mahal, Ankhor Wat and Oxford University in capital (yes built 6 unis in other cities too). Capital now pumping out 21 GP points per turn

Great Merchant's trade mission got us 1500 gold to aid with rushing

I mostly worked on infrastructure, building some financial buildings, research buildings and things like granary/workboats/harbor etc in smaller cities

No war during my turns

Working on building cottages and making sure all tiles are properly developed etc. We'll be fine now esp. when biology comes along we might even terraform some tiles to be more efficient

I prioritized printing press because it fuels our economy, then steel, then constitution and corporation due to come in a couple turns. I delayed sci method because it obsoletes our great library

We're in good position to start another war, probably with Inca because he's hella annoyed with us anyway.

Also keep a frequent eye on the resource trading screen. I milked the AI for all they're worth.

GL :)

[0] 1600AD - Taking stock of the nation. First off, I see the settler still idling in Boston. I send him towards a NY to meet with the ship dispatched to pick him up from guarding the (unimproved) fish at San Francisco.

Seattle is still unprotected. :( To that end, I dispatch one of the troops from Atlanta, which has two defenders.

For the purposes of protecting our naval possessions, I upgrade the two remaining galleys to Frigates. They will be dispatched to crucial fishing sites in short order.

I crank the research up to 100% for one turn so that we can get corporation in 1, instead of 2 turns.

I also money-rush the harbor in San Francisco to speed up its development.

I also change the production in Washington from Drydock to National Epic. It already produces 21 GPP per turn, let it produce 44! :)

Next up is the foreign front. I cancel the deal with Luis where we were giving him iron for deer and money. No need to supply our potential future enemies with strategic resources. I renegotiate the deal and give him stone instead. He can knock himself out with wonders, if he wants. We can still get all the ones we really want through money-rushing. ;) Same thing with Mansa. No need to give him ivory. He can have something that cannot be used to build units, instead. ;)

That's about it for the zero-th turn. :)

[1] 1605AD - Huayna demands education. I tell him where he can stick his demands, in eloquent terms, but he doesn't understand, because he is too uneducated. We get corporation, start on Replaceable Parts.

Athens completes drydock, and starts on a settler so we can settle more of those little isles. San Francisco completes the rushed harbor, and starts on a courthouse to cut 4gpt off its maintenance cost.

Next up is civics. We are using Organized Religion, yet we don't have any state religion. Uhh, say what? :) I revolt to Free Religion instead - lower maintenance, and higher research - what more can a godless nation ask for? :)

[2] 1610AD - Settler and escort from Boston unload at the East yellow dot. Courthouse is rushed in Corinth to improve our finances further. :)

[3] 1615AD - Luis offers Copper in exchange for Iron. Strategic resource for strategic resource, now that's what I call a fair trade. :) Sure, Luis, we'll accept. For now. I mark "Find Copper" on my TODO list. Saladin wants to trade world maps. Nah. We already have all the info about the world we need, and he only has a piddly 40 gold, not worth the trouble.

Philly completes its drydock, and starts on - you guessed it - a settler. :) Corinth builds the courthouse, and starts on a Forge, because it has a few hammers available, and hopefully one day it will actually be able to build things without rushing. :)

Portland is founded at Yellow Dot East, and starts on a Theatre.

01-Portland.jpg

I queue up a workboat, due in 1 turn, before the settler in Athens, because I realize the clams north of Athens don't have a fishing boat on them.

I rush the Library in Thermopylae to speed up the development process, cutting 13 turns down to 1.

[4] 1620AD - Boston completes a Grenadier, starts on another one, since the defenses on the main isle are a little bit thin. Sparta completes a Bank, starts on a Grocer, since health might soon become a problem there. Thermopylae completes Library, starts on a Bank, since there is a bunch of commerce there.

I rush the Theatre in Portland (25 turns to 1), and Courthouse in SF (9 -> 1). I also crank the research up to 100% again, so we get RP in one turn.

[5] 1625AD - We get replaceable parts, start work on rifling.

SF builds courthouse, starts on Bank, because why not. :) Portland completes the Theatre, starts on a Granary to promote growth.

I don't rush anything this turn, as I am out of money due to deficit research at 100%. :)

[7] 1635AD - NY completes its drydock, starts on Cavalry, because I reckon we might want to attack someone soon. :) Athens completes its settler, and starts on a workboat for Portland. Speaking of Portland, I rush the Granary there.

[8] 1640AD - Settler is built in Philly, loaded onto the waiting Galleon, together with an escort and sent Westward. Philly starts building a grenadier. Athens builds a workboat, and starts on another one, since Portland has two naval resources. Speaking of Portland, it starts on a Lighthouse. As I move some things around, Civ4 crashes, and I have to reload at 1630AD. :/

[9] 1645AD - We get Rifling, start on Steam Power. Washington builds the national epic, starts on a courthouse. Athens builds another work boat, starts on a Frigate to accompany our invasion Galleons. I also rush the banks in Thermopylae and San Francisco. And then the game crashes again. :( This is very odd indeed, because it's never crashed on me this much before. In fact, in all the time I've played before I think it only crashed twice...

[10] 1650AD - Boston builds its Grenadier, starts on a rifleman. SF builds bank, starts on an observatory. Thermopylae builds a Bank, starts on an observatory. St. Patrick, a great prophet is born in Washington. Luis and Mansa are at war. St. Luis is founded on Light-Blue Dot East. Also a bit of rushing is going on, too.

Several after-turn thoughts:

1. Two work boats are heading for Portland's naval resources to work them.

02-PortlandFishing.jpg

2. A galleon is headed for Pink Dot West.

03-PDW.jpg

3. I suggest that St. Louis be our base of attack on the Inca. You'll notice I pulled the Galleon from the Incan borders into the city and unloaded the troops. That's because the Knight and the Elephant need upgrading. :) I suggest we use three-four galleons to transport troops from the mainland to St.Louis, and two more from there to the Incan mainland. If you unload from a ship using the unload button in a city, the units don't lose their move turns, so they can load on an Inca-bound ship the same turn. Now, we have a base to upgrade units and regroup if needed when we start out our attack on the Inca at O-town.

04-StLouisAttack.jpg

4. Is this a terrible location for a holy city or what? If somebody wants to take it, I don't blame ya. ;) I doubt we'll be able to flip the city though.

05-Islam.jpg

5. Don't forget to keep money-rushing things in the multitude of the fishing villages we have, but also just in case leave some 200 gold in the treasury at the end of each turn - who knows, someone might decide to attack us, and then we would be screwed if we don't have the money to upgrade our troops. (Either that, or save up for a bit, and upgrade all the troops in advance.) And speaking of fishing villages - consider Portland which I only just founded in this turn set. It brings in 5 commerce - pulling its own weight already at 5 maintenance cost, and it's still at size 1. And we haven't even built the courthouse or any of the science or gold improvements - it will only get better from here on, as the city keeps growing and working more tiles, and building income-boosting improvements.

6. As far as more settling, once the existing settler settles north of Houston, the only place I would really want to get is south of Portland. Everything else can be left alone, I think. ATM, the AIs probably aren't so desperate for land as to start settling one-tile bits.

7. I also reckon it is time to start a military buildup. Get a few rifles, cavalries, and cannons going, and start transporting them over to St.Louis. Once we have a bunch of units up there and a few ships to transport them the last bit of distance, we shall be ready to strike the fatal blow to Huayna.

PRE-TURN
Wow! Things have changed since my last go. Concentrating on military build up this go, so the next person should get a scrap...

New York - Upgrade Cat to Cannon. Send Galleon E of NY to Sparta.
St. Louis - Upgrade Knight to Cavalry and load to Galleon. Grenadier to Galleon. Theatre > Courthouse.

Send Galleon to Settler spot N of Houston. Send Workboats to Fish & Clam Resources N of Houston. Galleon E of Portland to Athens.

Washington - Courthouse > Rifleman (5)
Athens - Frigate > Rifleman (5)
Chicago - Observatory > Market (25)
Corinth - Forge > Barracks (7)
Houston - Library > Courthouse (6)
Portland - Lighthouse > Courthouse (58)

TURN 02 - 1660
Settler arrive N of Houston. Send Galleon to Washington.

Portland - Workboats arrive and start Fishing/Clamming.
Sparta - Grocer > Rifleman (5)

TURN 03 - 1665
Mansa Munsa wants us to stop trading with the French. Don't think so matey! Found Miami (screenshot).

New York - Cavalry > Galleon (3)
Atlanta - Multimanage to slow growth and turn into a production powerhouse instead. Forge > Cannon (7)
Miami - Start Theatre

TURN 04 - 1670
Tokugowa wants open borders. We have a good relationship with him so I don't see why not. Huayna Capac wants us to stop dealing with the Malinese. Since we're about to slap himm about I kindly decline. Steam Power comes in. Coal is found near Portland and Atlanta (screenshot).

Sparta - Load Grenadier and Cannon to Galleon.
Philly - Grenadier > Cannon (6)
LA - Granary > Forbidden Palace (33)

TURN 05 - 1675
Sparta - Upgrade Maceman to Rifleman, load to Galleon and send to St. Louis.
Seattle - Harbor > Bank (25)

TURN 06 - 1680
Gems are found near Sparta. Galleon at New York is filled up and sent to St. Louis.

Washington - Rifleman > Grenadier (4)
NY - Galleon > Cannon (5)
Boston - Rifleman > Rifleman (6)
Athens - Rifleman > Rifleman (5)
Houston - Courthouse > Bank (9)

TURN 07 - 1685
Tokugowa wants Gems for Incense. Don't see why not.

Sparta - Rifleman > Cannon (6)

TURN 08 - 1690
Tokugowa wants a Defensive Pact. Hmmm...I say no as he's no real threat to us, but we want to fight wars on our terms.

Corinth - Barracks > Bank (13)

TURN 09 - 1695
Louis asks for assistance fighting the Malinese. Nope, sorry. He's now Cautious with us.

Atlanta - Cannon > Grenadier

TURN 10 - 1700
Railroad comes in and we go to Assembly Line (7). This'll allow us Infantry to back up our current troops that'll be smacking Huayna Capac around.

Washington - Grenadier > Galleon (3)
Philly - Cannon > Galleon (4)

OK. We have four Galleons at St. Louis (screenshot) and enough troops to fill them up, although I'd suggest waiting as there are three cannons in Philly waiting for a Galleon to pick them up. There are a couple of Cannons at St. Louis, but a few more should be enough to take any city down to zero defense for the Riflemen to take out the troops. There's a few Cavalry there as well to roam the lands and take out resources.

Good luck!
