JOE-03 - Xenophobia Returns

I've got it. Good work Talamane, glad you didn't have save problems. I'll have a crack after work. I'm more for keeping with a Space Race victory as it seems more in line with the variants.

I just reinstalled Civ IV and Warlords...I played a couple of small Warlords games yesterday with no problems (Conquest is sooo much quicker in Warlords).

I'll play and post after work tonight.

A little later than I hoped for, but here goes a frustrating turn report.

1855AD - Inherited
I see we have no Cat's/Cannon's to speak of, so I'll continue pillaging GW back to the stoneage.

1856AD - (1)
Pillaging (no losses).

1857AD - (2)
Steam Power comes in and Economics starts (3 turns). Brass Lions builds a Settler so I send him to our point of departure. Brass Lions starts a Cannon. Bayview finishes a Drydock and starts a Cannon. Izumo finishes a Cannon and starts another. Coal is discovered near Marubeni and is already mined.

1857adcoal.jpg

More pillaging and no losses...we're making more money per turn than we're losing at the moment.

1858AD - (3)
Kobeyashi Maru finishes a Cannon and starts another. Osaka finishes a Cannon and starts a Rifleman. More pillaging with no losses.

1859AD - (4)
Nagasaki finishes a Settler and starts a Rifleman. The Settler is sent to our departure point. Nara finishes a Frigate and starts another.

1860AD - (5)
Economics comes in and we revolt to Free Market for two turns of Anarchy...cool...free money! Er...looks like Washington has some reinforcements...this fleet is stuffed full of Rifles, Cavalry and Cat's!

1860aduhoh.jpg

We continue pillaging with no losses.

1861AD - (6)
Not sure where that fleet went...

1862AD - (7)
Oh, there it is!

1862adahha.jpg

This could get messy...

1862admessy.jpg

We sink the fleet with only one Galleon lost! The people demand retribution!

1862adretribution.jpg

My Cannon kills a Rifleman, but still, they would slaughter a hell of a lot of our units before we could raze the city, so I think better of it and carry on pillaging...if only we had more Cannon's! Most of the American cities are defended by nothing more than a couple of Rifles!

1863AD - (8)
Satsuma finishes a Market and starts a Cannon.

1864AD - (9)
Pillaging...lost a couple of Samurai to an adventurous lone Rifle. We killed him though. :goodjob:

1865AD - (10)
Most of our units on the American/Arabian () continent are heading to New York for some more pillaging until Cannons arrive to do some more permanent damage.

1865adnewyork.jpg

Corporation comes in one turn. I'd suggest going for Railroad afterwards, then beelining to Rocketry and make a start on The Apollo Program.

There are three Settlers at our departure point, and three Cannons ready to go. Obviously more are being built as well as some unhappy cities building happy buildings.

Don't worry about ordering some samurai in to soften up a rifle :) They cost upkeep every turn, and we don't have the money to upgrade all 20-30 of them, so we should either use them for that or just retire them. Plus, with their first strikes they're more likely to injure a rifle, letting a gren take it down.

Oh, this is a "got it" :)

Why did we revolt to free market? We gained a trade route (1-2 commerce per city) at the loss of a specialist (3-6 free beakers per city.) :smoke:

Also, no one whipped the bank in Sanctuary? We can't now that we're running emancipation, but it's worth more than 10 gpt :) I started that 40 turns ago... :crazyeye: Likewise, Nagoya hasn't been whipped, and it can only produce 1 hammer/turn (but it grows at 10 food/turn!)

I think we should revolt to Universal Suffrage (to get production in our commerce cities) & Mercantilism (even without rep, still more useful than Free Market without open borders.) Not having slavery is rough (we should have whipped all the infrastructure in Nagoya before revolting, as it will be lucky to finish a library now before we launch) but ultimately we need lots of towns asap to research the space ship. :)

Washington still has a heck of a lot of commerce, but he's hurting. He has 4 good cities left (Boston, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle.) If we take those out, I think he'll be crippled enough that he's not a threat to beat us to the ship. It will be very difficult to finish him via conquest in the current situation because we'd need to send a galleon completely around to the other side of the world to reach detroit, and beat his rifles amphibiously. We can let him live. If we have to declare and he attacks our colony, defending it isn't a high priority.

Like wow man so like agree. (sorry having a hippy moment)

Space ship it is always wanted to go into space.

Ok Jesusoneez off to the smoking lounge for you LOL.......

But hey if you got so much on the go it's easy to forget..

Well, I played my turnsets but I'm really busy right now (going on the road in a couple of hours) so the report will be shortish.

1. I razed three of Washington's cities, and his capital (Atlanta) should hopefully fall next turn (though I miscalculated, and he might be able to reinforce it  Right now there's one measely artillery sitting in it at 0.7 health that had beat a rifle at 80% odds!) We have a very strong stack in the south ready to raze one of his coastal cities next turn as well. I really think we should then get peace (see below.)

2. I used a lot of our old forces as cannon fodder. For instance, we had three combat 3 axemen. There's no point in upgrading those, so they were fodder (in lieu of a sacrifical cannon) in Boston. This frees up gpt which can be used for research/better units, and is better than firing them.

3. Saladin built a city near ours on his continent. If culture continues at the current rate, we'll need to declare in 9 turns. I suggest that when we do, we empty the city out and let him raze it. We can buy peace for a tech... this island is giving us nightmares, anyway :)

4. Washington has rocketry, so we're up against SAM's now, and he's probably building Apollo in Atlanta or Seattle. He doesn't have Assembly Line yet, though. He's also built at least 3 new cities we don't know about - right now he has 11, though hopefully two will fall next turn.

5. I think we must get peace with Washington after those two cities fall. Our economy is simply terrible right now. We're starving at 40% culture, and bleeding gold. WW is up to 12-14 in many cities. Without WW, however, we'd be doing quite well. I think we should get peace, grab some techs to get an idea of how advanced Washington is, and if necessary we can raze his cities with a very quick tank/destroyer/transport/infantry strike. It's entirely possible at this point that we've hurt him enough we'll beat him to the launch (likely, actually, I'd think, since humans are so much better at building the space ship intelligently.)

The Save

Ok, I got it. Won't be able to play til sometimes tomorrow.

So we're going to space now. I've always wanted to see that really shiny lightbulb from up close :p

Turn 0 - Wow, WW is really killing us here. Looked around and noticed this quaint little barb city that might be worth taking, so I sent a frigate to check it out.
Turn 1 - With really nothing left to improve, I had the workers add more roads to our land. That artillery went from .7 to 11.4 in one turn , but we take and razed Atlanta with no further loss. Bombed Portland down to 0, and suicided a cannon to burn down some of that rifle and sam infantry's health some. Tried a cav against the rifle at 67.7% and lost, so had to suicide another cannon against the sam. Luckily our cannon did the damage and retreats, our next 2 cavs take and razed Portland. Washington would not settle for peace for a tech, the most he would give is 30g. I decided to wait a couple of turns and see if I can take another city and sue for peace again
Turn 2 - Shuffled some troops around. We can probably take Seattle and then sue for peace. Moved our settlers onto the galleons to settle Washington's land (I think that's the plan for them right? )
Turn 3 - Bombed Seattle some, built some roads.
Turn 4 - Bombed Seattle some, built some roads. Our settlers starts heading towards Washington's island. Saw that HC is trying to take that barb city, let's see if we can take it from under his nose.
Turn 5 - Saladin's border touched ours  , no choice but to declare.
Turn 6 - Sent some samurai's against Seattle to weaken it a little, never expected one of them to actually take down the rifle :p We razed Seattle with the loss of a couple of samurai. Washington still would not settle a tech for peace. We really need peace with him, so I got him to deal out 60g (all he's got), World Map, and 4gpt. Now we only have to deal with Saladin. Our econ is out of the red. Lowered lux to 0 and increased science to 60% and we're still gaining gpt.
Turn 7 - Found Hakodate. Learned Assembly Line, research Railroad.
Turn 8 - zzzz
Turn 9 - We're back to 10% culture and 50% science for the war with Saladin.
Turn 10 - zzzz

I've got a settler in location to settle at a chokepoint on Washington and Saladin's island. The city Saladin has on our section can be easily taken with the stacks I have heading there. We can raze that city and resettle it with the available settler we have accompanying the stacks. I forgot to mention in my report that around turn 5-6 we took that quaint little barb city with no loss.

Edit: Had some problems with the upload server.
Here's the >>SAVE<<

This is "I got it" but probably won't play until tomorrow sometime. I thought our gameplan was space victory. So now we are going after Saladin but just got our WW problem under control and slowed down Washington. If we are going for space we should science it up and get to Apollo soon. I'll take a look at the save and check back later.

We are going for Space victory. I'd get peace as soon as possible with both America and Arabia so we can concentrate of building Spaceship parts and teching. Remember, berserks01 had to declare due to the variants of touching borders...we aren't specifically going after him so get peace ASAP.

Yep I understand that now Jesusoneez. So peace/extortion it is and space here we come. Just finding the game moving slow and hard to keep this old brain focused. Playing today and will post later.

T1

HC asks for MT tell him to go fly a kite
LP starts infantry
Nagasaki starts factory
Settle Ise start theater

T2

Nara starts factory
Izumo starts University
Teo something starts theater

Ok for RR want to know where the production cities are:
Rendaku - 47 hammers
Marubeni - 30 hammers (but we have more cities like this)

Priortizing workers for Rendaku > Marubeni when RR comes in. Upped research.

T3

Shimo > Library
Worker stuff and troop deployment

T4

Move troops back to take Isama from Saladin nice spot there.

T5

RR finished start combustion
Saladin will settle for peace (won't give a darn thing though) but decide that we should raze Yamana first.
We raze Yamana and settler Toyama there
DO I see a GP farm??
Make peace with Saladin.
Troop deployment > worker start RR on good production cities.

T6

Queue factory in Nara for settler we should settle beside Toyama
Troop deployment - worker stuff

T7

Wall street should be built look for candidate. Kyoto - Edo (in hindsight I missed Lake placid)
Marubeni > factory
KM > grocer
Rendaku candidate for IW/Factory
GA born move to new land for big border pop to stop AI settling.
(PS he would only give DR which is a AARAGHH )&&(&(* tech.)

T8
Kyoto > Grocer
Tokyo > Aqueduct (for health to get factory)
Satsuma > factory
Irrigation chain broken at Brass Lions have to remove cottage at LP only 2 gpt which must have been changed recently. Will put farm there to help BL as farms are only getting 1 for plains/2 for grass because of broken link.

T9

Workers doing RR's for the production

T10

Workers doing the same

Ok I hope you guys don't mind but I wanted to finish getting the GA to the new land and round it off to 1900 ad. Wooo baby we going to party like it's 1899 oh yeah....... little red corvette oops having a prince moment being retro fan and all.

T11

Workers building those railroads

T12

Finish combustion > Sci Meth
BV start grocer
Matsuma > Courthouse

Workers doing the chain gang

T13 - 1899ad

Sci Meth > Physics
Used GA to blow up Toyama.... (the horror the travesty)
Worker stuff

T14 - 1900ad to round off

Workers have a big hang over from the party for turn of the century. In the news world just ended... DOH

Working on Physics my suggestion would be artillery next to get rocketry
for Apollo. (again Rendaku good candidate)

LP > grocer
BL > factory
Cherokee > factory

Edo building WS but should have been LP although once we build market/grocer in Edo will be close to LP. No point in changing as LP takes 50 turns and Edo only 37 turns left.

Pentagon should be considered soon where a factory is built with coal but Rendaku good candidate. SOL done in 3 turns.

Have fun.......

Hey everyone,

I'm alive. In fact, I have loads of free time to play Civ, too. Basically, I went to housesit my parents' house (they just moved into a new home, two days before they went on vacation... :crazyeye:) I was sure if I'd be able to get Civ to run on their machine, but they had internet access - so I thought - so that's why I wasn't sure if I'd be able to play for a week.

Well, it turns out Civ runs fine, but they didn't have internet access in the new home until this afternoon, so I've been incommunicado since then... sorry for the delay, I didn't expect to be completely out of the loop for more than a few hours.

Now, I'm off to catch up on some threads!

Cross-posted in a couple of threads

 That's my mistake, I looked at that farm and couldn't find why we had it except for irrigation - except, I couldn't find what it was connected too. But I guess it was...

I can grab this after JoE plays :)

The save looks great. A couple of things...

Saladin will give us 13 (!) gpt for wheat. We'll probably fight him again soon, but it's not bad in the short term.

Nagoya isn't working it's workshop because I set it on food+commerce, but we should reassign some people to that. That's my mistake, I built the damn thing but forgot to work it... :crazyeye: Working it will quadruple it's production...

Our GNP is now 465 to Washington's 176, and rival average 112. Wow. What a difference 5 days (and peace!) makes :) Last time I looked, we were barely beating Washington.

We need to declare war on HC - our borders are touching at Shimonoseki (never heard of that city...) We don't have many units up there... but Huayna still doesn't have rifling so we should be able to put him out of his misery (can we send a few infantry up there on a galleon?)

Edo can speed up Wall Street by working some plains cottages... it's at +5 food atm. I don't know if the commerce hit is worth it, though :)

JesusOnEez - I mean the Axemen, not you - should be upgraded to a CR2/C1/Shock infantry I think. But that might be VQ07 talking...
