JOE-03 - Xenophobia Returns

Turns played - we got Liberalism->Nationalism, met Saladin, founded a bunch of new cities. Our economy is starting to hurt due to expansion & WW - we need to get cottages up and running in our cities. Haven't made peace with HC yet, he's up to either HBR or Theology. He only has 5 cities left, though.

Really busy now, though - will post report later tonight.

Okay, I just looked at the save and had some questions/comments.

1) The economic powerhouse (the #1 civ with the 180 GDP, compared to our #2 80 (!)) is Washington. He's going to be very dangerous... however, he has neither Philosophy nor Paper, so we've got Liberalism locked up. What do we want to go for? I'd normally guess Nationalism for Taj & on the path to Cavalry, but we have time to grab Optics->Astronomy too.

2) How much longer to we want to keep fighting Huayna? He has 8 cities left still, not sure how much longer we can keep rolling. We don't have the resources to settle his continent yet - we still have land on our island, and we don't want to fight a land war with him - as it is, he can't retaliate until he gets astronomy. I'd think razing Tiwanaku (his holy city) should get him to offer a tech - he's already offering his world map + gold + gpt, so he's close. If we leave his island completely empty, we risk the first person to Astronomy (probably Washington) settling it. That could be dangerous.

3) Where do we want to build Heroic Epic? I think Osaka might be the best overall place for it now that it has some farms up, and it has forests to chop, but I was considering starting Taj Mahal there. Marubeni would also be good as it's coastal so it can build cheap naval units too, but it has the Forbidden Palace so we can't team it up with West Point.

Any suggestions? I'll play in a little bit. If I don't hear anything I'll go for Nationalism with Liberalism and on to cavalry as has been suggested. I'll settle if HC's defenses look strong and he's willing to settle for a "fair" price.
1) Maybe we should somehow bribe Sally to war with Washington with us. Dunno how that's gonna be possible but it would really help.

2) Maybe we should plant a city on that island and have it christian our island? But if we don't manage it well, we'll run into the poor house real quick. Better yet, we don't need domination do we? We could do conquest instead.... maybe

3) Osaka sounds good, or if we're ambitious we could plant it on a city on their island and have it pump out units there :)

Okay, here's the quick rundown & the save:

  1. We researched Liberalism-> (free) Nationalism->Gundpowder
  2. Taj Mahal is queued up in Marubeni after it builds it's forge. Ideally, the city should grow to size 7 - that will give it 20 base hammers (so 25 with forge, 30 if we run OR)
  3. I settled nearly our entire continent. Our economy is terrible (down to 25% research and 10% culture used to fight WW.) We need to get workers to our new cities, chopping theatres/courthouses and laying down cottages.
  4. Huayna only has 5 cities left. I think we could just finish him off, but if we could get a good tech after Cuzco falls he'd be crippled enough we could finish him off at our leisure I think. That might be better than Washington getting his land.
  5. I merged the GS in Lake Placid. I think that should be the last one we merge - it's getting to the point where we won't see the return on our investment soon. Our next one (in 10 turns, though 20% for an artist) can be used to research Printing Press, which would be a much-needed boost to our economy.
  6. We razed 3 of HC's cities for the loss of two catapults and two samurai. The two samurai died because he rebuilt his island city touching our culture on the island to the e of it, which is on a hill and required an amphibious assault. We have a stack of 4 samurai investigating his SE city and our main stack has just layed eyes on Cuzco (not too heavily defended.) HC sent a stack to attack us but it didn't do any damage. HC will settle for a tech, but not one of his good ones. Taking Cuzco and getting peace might be the best option - that should leave him more or less crippled.
  7. While waiting for galleys home, our troops could do some pillaging for research money. :)
  8. We have a settler with moves left in... umm... Kobeyashi Maru. Not sure what we want to do with him. We have no really good city spots left on our continent. We could send him up over to HC's lands, or settle a marginal river-horse (but no food resource) site in our lands. I originally made him to settle the two-fish fishing village between HC and us to ensure he doesn't resettle it and force us to declare war again.

Talamane said he couldn't play until tonight so we made a switch. Jesusoneez is back so I would say that makes him up. Of course that decision lies with Jesusoneez.....

JesusOnEez - UP
Talamane - switched (on deck)
Armstrong - just played (switch with Talamane)
Berserks01 - strategizing for the future
Cosmichail - thinks we should settle for techs with HC

In that case, I've got it. I agreed to play ChrTh's SG before reading this so I'll play that first. If I have time tonight I'll play this one as well...if not, tomorrow night instead.

Rock on!

Oh, and glad to see you've been sticking to the variants...I see you had some trouble with them. I don't think I mentioned anything about barb cities, so taking them is OK (if I'd thought about it originally, I'd have said not, but hey-ho).

EDIT : What should have been done when we took HC's city at the start of the war was to gift it back to him as punishment (stated in the original variants). The variants are quite a lot to remember when you're in the thick of things, but replaying to avoid the mistake is a bit of a cheat IMHO. Never mind though eh? Generally, I think we're doing better than I expected with these variants. I'm playing tonight and will surge forth to Liberalism.

Glad to read that Mao was snuffed out and that we at least have our island to ourselves...next, THE WORLD!

Jesusoneez......

I agree that should have been done (gifting) but Talamane started that with trading with HC and replaying his turn so technically we have lost this game due to the variants not being observed. I did offer Berserks01 to gift them back during my turn but he wanted to replay instead. Then I overlooked to declare war on Monty but went back to last turn and declared.

Just a piece of advice what we do in my SG.... is periodically to relist the variants during the game to keep everybody aware of them. (a kind of shortlist) Since we are all playing different SG's it's easy to forget.

I not worried about technically losing since it's about having fun. Sorry to hear about jolly ole England. So who is going to play Italy?? (pardon moi I am not a big "football" fan but always root for my homeland - Holland)

It's a bummer ... but Cosmichail is right, according the variant we've lost already.

After hearing that, I've half a mind to start over :p

Kind of "nothingy" turnset. The highlights were making peace with Monty and HC, settling the two fish city and sinking Monty's Settler Galley. Taj Mahal is being built and Gunpower is in. Other than that, money's a big problem hence a few markets are being built.

My apologies. I cannot play my turns until Sunday nite. I have some RL stuff that cannot be put off. Skip me if necessary.

Initially Armstrong and Talamane switched earlier as Talamane was busy. You sure are one busy old guy. Must be all those nice Korean people in your life.

So in theory Armstrong already took his turn, Jesusoneez took his turn after being away for a while so in fact I Berserks01 would be up after Talamane. So if Berserks01 can do it before Sunday I think you should go ahead just to keep the game moving. It's up to you Berserker (you a viking) if you have time.

Me Berserker, me got it.

On deck sir on board the USS Ronald Reagon one of the greatest warships in the world.

Turn 0 - Took a look around, everything looks good. MM a little for more gold and faster settler production.
Turn 1 - 4 -
Turn 5 - Izumo found.
Turn 6 - Learned Feudalism, started Optics (we need galleons to ferry our troops over seas.
Turn 7 - 10 -

As I expected this is a builder's turnset. Not much happened.

"got it" so no more warring.....:(
