So DR and Sex & Samfund worked together on this. It's basically about a man (John) going around with a penis that has the same powers as Mr. Fantastic, being able to elongate absurdly at will, and fly as if a helicopter. Diller and dillermand are silly words for penis in Danish, so his name is kind of John Schlongman or John Penisman. With the added punnery that -man in a surname is quite normal.

The penis seems to have a mind of its own and sometimes its powers get in the way of John's everyday life. The show is intended for 4-8 year olds and has been received well among children, but sparked a ton of controversy.

What is DR and Sex & Samfund
DR - Denmark's Radio: a media conglomerate that's independent but still in some respects "the government's TV" by subsidy and influence. Used to be the government's monopoly on Danish media. It's the primary force in Danish TV and radio, and has a lot of small branches.

Sex & Samfund - Sex and Society: a very influential NGO in Denmark that supports proper sex education, rights to one's own body and sexuality, and some humanitarian work. I can't stress enough how important and well-educated these guys are in regards to making sure there's a healthy development of sexuality in Denmark. They helped me a lot as I was growing up and provided a buttload of the material we used in school. Here is their English homepage - I have no idea why their English name is The Danish Family Planning Association. It sounds dogwhistly, but they truly aren't. They're very liberal.

The show
There's a pretty good YouTube video here that just recounts the individual episodes' content while showing example footage of what the show looks like while being quite neutral with judgment. It does do some mistakes in regards to the difference between Denmark and EU, but his summaries of the episodes are decent as an introduction to what the show is like on a concrete level.

The series can also be seen on DR's homepage for free, afaik. It works in Denmark at least. https://www.dr.dk/drtv/serie/john-dillermand_227277

The controversy, very shortly
To sum up the controversy from what I can tell - most people think it's reasonably harmless fun, and some believe that it gives kids (boys) a more relaxed relationship to their body. The controversy: From the left, there have been some accusations of it reinforcing rape culture and patriachy as the show's penis is truly intrusive to John's surroundings. From the right, people often have qualms about indecency. From both sides, there are concerns about pedophilia. All in all, some people want the show shut down, a minority from what I can tell, but still. The kids love it though, but that was to be expected.

So what do you think about this?
Do you think the show is appropriate and useful? If not, do you think in the abstract that such a show is possible for kids? What would you have done differently?

I'm not sure what my own thoughts are on this. Show seems relatively harmless on its surface: I don't have a mote of agreement with the idea that the show is indecent, or why it should matter in this particular form of indecency. I'm also a feminist that believes it is possible to handle a penis with absurdity in media without it being rape culture et al. At the very least, I think it's more complicated than so.

The show's internal logic is very remniscent of other kids' shows, the difference is that the tropish inanimate troublemaker is now a penis. Could have been a talking car or, if we want a bodily organ, a magical heart. My own real concern is whether this could affect whether kids know to appropriately respond when sexually assaulted. But with all of my doubts, Sex & Samfund was in on it, and they know their stuff. So while they may have done a blunder, I want to wait a bit and actually read some opinions from paedagogues and sexologists before knowing what to think.

My daughter found the preview video a few days ago. I think I basically have your view of it. A bit surprising at first but essentially harmless. I mean boys do figure out they have a penis at a pretty early age and jokes about this biology abound, can't stop or deny this. It is undeniably a funny organ. I can see the rape culture argument but don't accept it. These arguments often go too far and rape culture is better dealt with by serious educational efforts on consent and physical and emotional respect.

Still not as good as Farfur the Mouse.
I mean you can't top Farfur being beaten to death by the hated israeli police in the final episode.
The struggle for Palestine goes on.

I'm mostly surprised this wasn't made in Japan. It's w/e, not the most tasteful thing but hardly worth banning. Parents can opt for their kids not to access such shows if they don't want them to see them. Though from what I've heard from nephews/nieces/etc. if parents aren't quite capable with controlling web traffic/internet usage nothing this show can do will be anything but trivial compared to what kids are finding online.

close down the show , along with Denmark . Modesty is a nice thing to have , despite malpractice and oh my , things to ban . Every cartoon has a version that (some) people would claim to be a joke , and (some) of (some) would do it to their kids , right ? There are those who ascribe the specific German mindset of WW ll to bitter interwar years of no coal and every kid in one bed for warmth stuff , do we or whatever need some more limit crossed ? The creative team that created it surely didn't watch an equivalent in their pre-teens or whatever to come up with creative brilliance , right ? Nothing to be lost am pretty sure .

I don't understand what you're writing. The first three sentences I kind of get. Close down the show, close down Denmark, and modesty is good?

Genitalia is considered indecent under law and it’s prohibited to broadcast or publish it.

The TV show is basically Gumby shorts with a penis. How’s that educational? I’m not comfortable with this for some reason.

It's not an educational show per se, it's kids' entertainment on DR, although it's co-developed by Sex & Samfund - Sex & Samfund is indeed more of an educational institution.

Compared to anything that the Kansas Board of Education could devise?

There’s something I find objectionable about it, but I can’t describe my discomfort well. But I’m also looking at the show as an adult, so my view of things is different from that, I assume, as its intended audience.

Is this supposed to mean something? It’s lost on me.

The Kansas Board of Education has ideas of what is educational that are weirder than you can imagine.

I think that's part of the reason the show sparked controversy. The experts that were on board have a pretty good grasp of children's sexuality and concept of body (which exists, but is an experience completely incompatible with adult sexuality); the kids seem less uncomfortable with it and find it more amusing and curious than anything, from what I can tell.

Well, it is covered/clothed......so no blurred out censoring needed.

I think Texas is a better example. All the same controversies as Kansas (intelligent design), plus more!

Let kids watch it, they'll get tired eventually. But what's wrong with South Park? Do some children have such a strict upbringing that hints about sexuality isn't enough liberating, they need to see actual genitalia?

Obviously, the pride parade is proof of that. The longer you're locked in, the more is needed to set you free. I don't know how important extreme manifestations are compared to other solutions though.

The target audience for this is 4-8 year olds; South Park isn't really for that age group. (If your assumption here was that it was for the same audience.)

Also, no actual genitalia are technically seen; the penis is always covered by a red-and-white-striped cloth.

So it's more like Where's Wally's Willy?

 Kinda. You can watch the YouTube video in the OP and look at what the show looks like
Pass. I'm off to watch Trump stuff. The end of that ***** is finally in sight.

I don't blame you. Some things are more important (and interesting). It was just in case you wanted some concrete stuff to relate to when talking about this. ^^

oh-kay , boys have a thing , which solves problems with volumetric increase and ı can see all sorts of openings to get some 4 year older to provide the said . Yeah , the experts have been like alarmed about this and stuff . The rest like involves the idea that every popular cartoon has a "variant" that might be shown to some underage person to get him/her think everything including incest is fun and cool and acceptable , like because it is on TV , well , sort of . ı get to follow a lot of pointlessness and the only time ı have ever noticed was that some guy famous for black men and whitest women was the subject of two or three posts , where some dude asked for his e-mail adress from some other dudes and the dude got no answer . Yes , modesty is good , people should learn things when its time comes , ı do not think some European country with kindergarten lessons where they undress every kid is not doing anything good and pedophilia is the only thing that the world can still agree upon . We have no need for cultural and enlightened Europeans to create a precedent , considering those who accuse Sweden of being the country where daughters lose it to their fathers as a general rule are so fond of fondling little boys . And the way it enchances unity ; the noise raised by the Pizzagate affair and the child trafficking issues is a sign of how prevalent it might be within some other Western society but certainly more within the ranks of the accusers . The European norms are so much shaped by the actions of the siblinglovers that occupied Europe and took too much time and effort to be defeated and still utterly failed in total anhilation of a race or something ; those norms are preventing a return to the golden ages . A newer breed of motherlovers might do well , including lSlL style throat cutting of Commie type losers , and somehow am like the only one here in this thread to be the safest . Consider that the 4 year old kid living next door to you will be capable of handling knives in a decade . Limits are the end result of millenias , let some of them keep existing .

and yeah , ı like Leon the movie , what are you people going to do about it ? lt is always better with the cutting of a scene or two , because you know , without them every critic would find it most implausible ...

Family Planning generally means reproductive rights ie contraception and abortion and sexual health, so that tracks with what they're going for.
