I just got Civ I and (alright this is probably not a good thing to say) I think it's a funny little game but defenitly not more not less then that.

Alright I didn't play it that much yet but IMHO Civ III is much better.

Now come on and convince me it IS the best game ever hehehe:D

I'm not going to convince, if you like one game better than another, well that's fine. If you badly want arguments why Civ1 is better look here or here, everybody has already given their opinions in these two threads.

Well, i won't go into the whole argument thing but you should remember what time frame civ1 came out in. This was rather cutting edge!!!!

Congrats on getting it however, it will teach you good strategy and you can play it quickly.

My original copy has been gone for years and I just am so happy to have it back again, just got to try and remember how it works,{just got another copy this morning}

Er, hi. I guess I better introduce myself and this seemed the best place to do it.

I too just got Civ I and have been playing it for about a week. I don't need to be convinced. :goodjob: But I do have a problem.

I use a Mac, and my problem is that I downloaded a copy from an abandonware site, and this copy only runs in black & white. It runs and I am happy to have it, but some of the terrain is hard to read in b&w (oases, oil, gold, etc.) and some of the action windows either aren't labeled or the labels only become visible when you click on the buttons. Also, the city windows don't seem to give as much information as they ought to.

I have downloaded and printed out the manual and other helps from elsewhere on this site and find them very helpful even though they were written for the PC version and not everything applies.

So, my question is, are there any websites where I can find more support for the Mac version? And is there a color VGA version available for Mac?

TIA and later,
Michael

As you are a newcomer I must first say you are very welcome here. :goodjob: However, it's probably best you understand this site's policy on downloads before you post again.

Civ1 is not abandonware. What you have is an illegal download from an illegal site. Please don't be surprised therefore if you receive little help on download related questions.

Please don't be tempted to post addresses of download sites yourself unless of course you want your posts edited or deleted by me and your account closed.

Sorry to be so heavy handed, but if you remember these few points I'm sure you'll have a long and happy time here! :)

stormerne, thanks for you reply. I see that I was misinformed about the status of Civ I Mac. Can you tell me where I might find a legal copy? I do not support the pirating of software, especially for the Mac as that is a smaller market anyway and I feel the need to support those who are willing to write for it.

Michael

You might be able to obtain it in the bargain sales at some shops (well at least I've seen that for the Windows version, the Mac version might be a different story....) but you can also try to buy it at an auction site like eBay or alikes.

Isn't it just a joke? It is illegal to download, however you can't buy it anywhere. And what benefit is it to the game creators if you buy the game from ebay? They won't make money off it. It is all so silly to call this game anything but abandonware because it is abandoned by the game creators.
But I have another opinion also. If you buy a Macintosh, you should be fully prepared to face these kind of obstacles. I used to get so frustrated with Sega, and how they endlessly stopped supporting their systems. And how I couldn't get the games I wanted cause they wouldn't ship to Canada.
I realize now I was very immature then to keep buying Sega machines. If you want the best software, you need to buy the most popular system. Macintosh is dying, and people who own it just get frustrated owning it. Now we see Civ 3 isn't going to have the new patches on Macintosh. Why put yourself through that frustration? Buy a PC, and your Civilization cravings will always be satisfied.

Well, IMHO civ3 is one of the worst games ever, the only reason I got it was civ1. Civ 1 is the defintion of a TBS game.

Civ3 isnt that bad, sure it has a few realistic problems lol

but i think they should have more units inside an army in civ3 and also like a tired effect for armies. for example too much fighting or traveling long distances

What is cool in Civ3, from what little I have played it, is the fact that settlers no longer do the development around the towns. This is more realistic, and doesn't drain resources like it did in previous games. They are called "Workers" right?

Civ 1 may now seem to be a 'funny little game and not more than that' (although I don't think so), at the time it was released in 1991 a lot of people thought it was the best game ever. At that time it was also seen as a very big (3 MB!!) and complex game.
Civ 2 is much better of course, while civ 3 is a little "CTP-like" and over the top, but Civ 1 is still a very cool game to play in its 'simplicity'.
