In my current game I was busy wiping at the Aztecs as 1 should. I had him down to 2 small citys both lightly defended and had stacks ready to finish the job. The start of the turn Napolean declares war on Monty, without any inclanation (no stacks nearby not even remotly near Monty) now I wiped out the Aztecs that turn but I reckon had I had to wait 1 more turn we would have seen Monty capipulate to Napolean.

Has anyone had similiar experiences?

I just thought that was rather sneaky of the AI.

In theory Montezuma and Napoleon cannot speak to each other (negotiate Capitulation) for 'X' (usually 10) number of turns once the war declaration's made - therefore you still have your 'window of opportunity'.

Yes, I would not have worried about a capitulation then. The only thing it could do is capit to someone it's not at war with. And many AIs will not do this in that spot because "We fear your enemies" or some such line.

But there are a few 'foolish' AI's who accept bizzare vassals in the worst of times...

I know that when you declare war on AI, you can't speak with them for a set amount of turns (does anybody know the formula for exactly how long it takes until you can get them to speak with you again?). I'm assuming a similar mechanic exists when AIs goes to war with each other.

In a recent game, I attacked Isabella who had been in war with Hannibal for ages. After taking a number of her cities she ended up capitulating to Hannibal because she still wouldn't talk to me.
