OK, I've just installed Civ4 on my Vista machine, first installing ver. 1.00.000 from the CD, then upgrading to 1.61, then 1.74. Also upgraded DirectX after getting the .dll error.

Now when I try to start the game from the CD, I get this message:

"Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application

Click here for more information about this error"

If you click, you go to an ad for the CivRev game, with no support info(http://www.2kgames.com/?product=136093115&locale=1033&error=6)

Now...I don't think I'm so stupid that I can't put the correct disc in the drive. I've tried both Disc 1 and Disc 2, tried starting the game directly from loading Disc 1 in the drive, done a complete re-install, even tried running the game at different stages of upgrading (both 1.00.000, 1.61, and 1.74) - no solution.

Any ideas? I haven't had issues installing any other programs, including CivIII.

Put the other disk in, Firaxis screwed up some of 'em and put the executable on the installation disk rather than the "Play" disc. Just pop the other of the two in and everything should work fine.

welcome to cfc :band:

this is a safedisc issue - the copy protection system does not recognize your disc as genuine. There are a host of reasons for this, some are:
- make sure your cd-drive drivers/firmware are updated
- run the game with administrator rights
- try running the game in xp compatibility mode

Thank you ori, I think you are right about the copy protection issue. I will try your suggestions, although I had already made the XP compatibility switch in the Properties menu. Hopefully one of the others will help!

...none of the ideas above worked. Does anyone have any other ideas?

If you go to Microsoft.com and check for compatibility Civ4 BTS is the first one of the Civ's listed as compatible to Vista (but I hear it has its problems) all the rest before are incompatible. 2K has major problems with its software by using and old DX9 file and InstallShield file but are not willing to respond that there games are not compatible with Vista. Vista was great for me till I found it would not load or play most of the games I play in the strategy genre and alot of the online free games.

Civ4 should be compatible with Vista after patch 1.74 (and most people here with vista seem to have little problems - apart from the installer not creating shortcuts.
That said there has been an influx of people lately that had tremendous problems in Vista 64bit...

I've tried all suggestions found here and on Apolyton or even WinVista Forums.. None worked. So I put my winxp installation disk in that machine and reformated to XP and threw Vista on the pile of bad software along with ME. Man I wish I could get my money back on Vista.

I'm stuck with the same problem as rgb. Thing started acting up when I tried to download the patch... anybody got any other suggestions?
