Just want to clarify about spreading religion...

But does free religion elimenate that gpt?

You know, I looked back at all my games so far, and in all 4 games no AI has ever gone to free religion. I can tell you, without a doubt, that *you* switching to Free Religion doesn't affect the gold. I would doubt that the AI changing over would matter either, but I can't verify that.

I don't think switching to Free Religion changes anything. *You* changing to Free Religion doesn't.

These shrines can bring in pretty large amounts of money. If you've got a bank+market+grocer+Wall Street in a shrine city, you're pulling in 3g for every city with that religion.

I can pretty much guarantee that Free religion doesn't change anything. I used the UN to force Free Religion a while ago, and my money from my shrines didn't decrease.
Please note that I wasn't specifically looking at this, so I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Money from shrines doesn't go away in Free Religion... It's linked to the shrine building, not the state religion

What you do lose is the line of sight to other cities with the religion. For this you need the Holy City and the state religion set.

Capturing holy cities won't give you LOS either...

Edit: So you can only see the free LOS if the religion you're trying to view is your own state religion? WEAK!!!

Thanks for the comments guys. I was looking at my first game, at the end of the game I had cities right next to each other with different religions (one had christianity, the other did not). I'm not sure of the mechanics of religion spread, but non-missionary ways seem to be...not working? Or maybe a specific ruleset is required. I guess I didn't realize the whole religion thing since I am playing at chieftan level. I'll crank it up a bit next game. Oh, and there is a bit about it on page 80 of the manual; it's a nice start, but i find the manual doesn't go into alot of depth.

If religion is spread by trade routes it might make a difference if you are running free trade (foreign religions) or mercantilism (own religion)
