Just won a Time victory as Brazil. Some pointers?

I just played a very long game with Brazil against all the new Civs in BNW with Brazil. I was playing an archipelago map, Huge, on prince difficulty. I have a save file that might interest you guys. Basically, I was landlocked in the middle of the world fighting with Poland for the top score. I had a ton of culture but it seemed like I never had enough to catch all the other civs for a culture victory. Should I have developed some more naval warfare so I could have shut them down some more? Also, it seems like I was gaining beakers (science) way too slow this game. If this interests anyone there's a save linked. Please tell me what you think I should have done earlier or your thoughts on the game. Thank you! Slimleadbrazil is the main save about 10 turns from a time victory and 1984 brazilbuydiplomacy was when I shooting for a diplomacy victory but Venice made that impossible even with 26k gold.

I assume you built your Musician's Guild as soon as it was available, right? One of the things that is really counter intuitive about the culture victory is the fact that the late game tourism boost for concerts is stronger than making a GWOM could ever be, so you want to save building the guild until the very end of the game so you can pump as many tours into the culture runaways as possible.

I did build a musicians guild early on. Even then, I thought concert tours just provide culture and not tourism?

No, concert tours provide tourism to the civ that you use it on (and then 20% of that tourism is given to every other civ in the game; useful for those jerks that just won't open their borders). What you're thinking of is the political treatise, which gives culture based on the same or a very similar formula to the great scientist bulb.

Also with Brazil, make sure that your Great Musicians are born during a Carnival, that makes them basically double strength.

I really don't think it's a good idea not building the Musician's Guild until that late. There will be a LOT of turns passed before his concert tour tourism start reaching into the thousands, and you'll be missing out on both the culture and tourism output from the great works and the musician specialists themselves all along. But yeah, same as with any other great person you should use their special ability when you're really late in the game as opposed to settling them.

OP, I haven't looked at your saves, but winning a time victory means you made some serious mistakes - I've played for hundreds of hours and I've never won by time. You should always be able to reach one of the other victory conditions before 2050, especially on Prince difficulty. If you were teching that slowly your game most likely needs general improvement rather than in any specific field. I suggest reading some guides or watching 'let's plays' on YouTube from some of the better players.

Do you happen to know any of the better players that have *recent* Lets plays? I don't mind some older ones if they happen to be very insightful and teach someone a lot about the game but BNW games would be the best.

Thanks.

MadDjinn's always a good teacher. He plays on Deity but most of what he talks about can be applied to the lower levels, too. He recently started an India culture game and has already completed a game as Poland and Venice.

I didn't check your file, but it seems you did well, or you wouldn't have won. When playing on archipelago, though, you have to invest in a good fleet, regardless the civ you are playing. About Brazil, its UI and UA come a bit late in the game, the best choice is still settle where you can get the most of the jungle tiles and focus on population growth until you get the brazilwood camps up and running. The golden ages are overkill, so do your best to have them more frequently ( mercantile CS, luxuries and GAs ) and longer ( Chichen Itza & SPs ). adopting rationalism early on and focusing on science buildings should put you ahead of all the players in beakers before you adopt an ideology. With the right wonders, theming bonuses and happiness, it is pretty much impossible to beat Brazil on a culture victory.

Appreciated, thank you x.
