KeepRes=-1, Video Mode=1600

Try creating one. Open notepad, enter the Video Mode=1280, save it as 'civilization3.ini' (make sure you have "All Files" selected under Save File Type so it doesn't save as a .txt).

Can be 1024, 1152, 1280, 1600, 1792. Changes the game's resolution to the value specified (instead of the default 1024x768).
Only the following resolutions are supported with this command:
1024x768
1152x864
1280x1024
1600x1200
1792x1344

Shame that other resolutions, including widescreen are not supported. I mean, it is quite flexible already, what is stopping it from being able to work in other resolutions? Should be a matter for that patch which we'll never see... :(

I played on a widescreen notebook with 1280x768 resolution and the game looked great. There was no skewing, stretching, or cropping. I don't think I ever added a [KeepRes] or [VideoMode] line to my *.ini files; it seemed to work from a clean install.

Without the keepres option, it tries to stretch the 1024x768 screen onto my 1280x800 laptop screen. I need the keepres to actually get it to work properly, otherwise it's all stretched out and the pixels are messed up because it's not in native resolution.

I'd like to see them put a lot of these options IN-GAME in Civ4. Civ3 is a professional game on so many levels but it's not on others, and accessibility of options is one of those.

I may have told my graphics adapter (not the game) to "not stretch to fit display" on that notebook (I do that on my desktop digital flatpanel). Is that an option for you?

Hi, I recently moved to a new computer and got the dreaded "Cannot Display This Video Mode" error. I have followed the answers and tried setting the Video Mode (1024 and 1280) line and/or KeepRes=1, but to no avail. Upon starting the game, I get the error message, then the intro video plays (looks as normal), then when the intro finishes it goes back to the black screen and error message. This is driving me nuts - can anyone help?

What is your desktop setting and OS (operating system)? If you are running at one of the values that the game does not support well use Video option. iirc 1990 is one I had problems with and had to set to another value.

Video Mode=1280

Keep in mind that the widescreens didn't come on the scene and wreck things for 6 or 7 years after Civ 3 was released ... if the developers had the foresight to predict that, they wouldn't have been making games, they'd have been making investments!

Hi vxma, I set the screen at both 1024 and 1280 before starting the game - neither makes any difference. I didn't try higher than that. OS is windows 7 - I just upgraded from Windows 98SE with a new box, but the screen is the same as before.

Right now I am using KeepRes=1 and the desktop is 1920x1024 landscape. Win7 with 24", was a 25", but it stopped working a few weeks ago.
