KeepRes=-1, Video Mode=1600

To get it in a windowed mode, you have to use KeepRes=1 before VideoMode=(whatever).

That's the way I have it, and it works for me.

I think the keepres and videomode cancel each other out. Try taking the keep res out if you want to force 1280 mode, or manually set you res to 1280x1024 before starting the game.

I had this problem too, but it was back in March of 2002, after I first got the game. . . I don't remember what I did to fix it.

I've tried it with and without the KeepRes option even in the file, and VideoMode=xxxx doesn't have any effect whatsoever. If I change my desktop resolution to 1280x960, and then turn the KeepRes=1 option on, the game runs in 1280x960. That is the only way I am able to change the resolutions of the game.

So how can I get VideoMode=xxxx to work? I don't want ot have to change my desktop resolution each time I launch the game.

Thanks!

You know, in Civ 4 they really ought to add an option to change this in-game, like they have in every other game on the market... :rolleyes:

From what Gray Fox is saying about using the two options together to get the game windowed and what myself and others have run into with not being able to use the VideoMode option to increase the game resolution, it sounds like the game will never run at higher resolution than your desktop.

So the only use of the VideoMode feature is to run the game at LESS than your desktop resolution so that it is windowed. Otherwise you just use KeepRes to make the game run as high as possible (which is whatever your desktop is).

Has anyone seen behavior that doesn't match that hypothesis?

I guess, you are right. Additionally, this would make sense in my eyes, since a lower resolution can be maintained anytime, whilst a higher one could cause severe problems with both, graphic card as display.

And/or a way to play in windowed mode.

Makes sense guys. I have a 22" monitor, and even the game with the game 1600x1200 it feels like the game is "zoomed out" too far, so 1280x960 is a good balance.

Thanks again!

Question for those running windowed:

How does map scrolling work with the mouse? Moving your mouse to the edge of the map would just move it out of the window, right?

Grey Fox:

I've got these two lines heading my .ini file...

KeepRes=1
VideoMode=1280

With a 1400x display on my laptop...

Yet, when I launch the game, it keeps my res, but only fills 1280px worth of game. The borders (60px edge left & right) are black and unused. The game doesn't get any window handles or such...

Are you running any other software to force fullscreen apps to run with windowed handles? I know there's a few things out there that do that - but I'd like to avoid installing software like that as much as possible...

Thanks!

Does your video card support 1280 mode?

Yep - my video card supports it no problem.

If I set my desktop to 1280x1024, Civ3 will run that way, but there doesn't seem to be any way to get the game to run in a higher resolution than your desktop.

Am I missing something?

ATI Radeon 9500 latest drivers, 19" Sony Monitor.

Voice Quality=0
VideoMode=1280
KeepRes=1
Refresh=70

That's what I get with those lines inserted. I've tried a few different combinations of line placement, but I either get that or no change at all. Any help?

Don't mind me- I'm ********...

Of course, the screen appears that way, because the pic is sized at 1024x768. The gameplay however, runs great at 1280x1024 ;D Thx for the thread and the ini settings :D

Heh :)

I still just wanna know how to get window handles on the damn game when it's set to being smaller than my desktop size :)

No, you don't. Your desktop resolution (typically set with some tools of your graphic card) constitutes the upper limit of the resolution. With the settings in the .ini file you perhaps could *decrease* the resolution, but not *increase*
This makes sense, since a lower resolution is no problem for the graphic card/display combination, but a higher one very well could be.
If you feel, that a higher resolution would be fine for the game, but would limit the display of your Excel (for instance) I would recommend that you keep the "keepres" line in the .ini file and switch the resolution by making use of your graphic cards driver.
Modern graphic cards allow for easy switching, most times.

If you have the need to constantly switching back and forth, try to find the resolution which fits both demands the best, and keep that one.
