Khmer Empire?

I have been able to get the first 2 goals easily using the Philippines as the third city. Even without the 2nd banana what used to be there (now replaced with gold) it is still possible to get the city up to a 9 by 1450.

The Mongols can be a huge pain as can European Theocracies.

Its the European Theocracy thing that causes me my biggest problem with them and that is I simply cant be bothered travelling half way round the globe with a single missionary to fail spreading the religion. Well ok thats not a problem strategy wise thats just down to my attention level slipping... :D

Have you tried just going through Asia, and Africa? I find you don't even need the Europeans to achieve 30% because they don't always make up that large amount of the world! Mongolia are important to get, as is Russia, then move onto the Americas.

I normally find Arabia is a Theocracy and controls much of Asia and Mongolia is normally difficult thanks to the Chinese generally hating me. Ill give it a blast though...after Turkey.

I do find it annoying how a reborn civ gains ALL of its culture back. Yet when you cause a city to flip, it does not retain the culture. I understand losing all the culture when you capture a city, but when India gets reborn (in this example) i lose all cultural value in teh area (playing as Khmer obviously).

Couldn't afford to raise Dehli. It is a GP factory and a double holy city! (I am playing the 3000BC start)

Woo! Monarch level, managed to get the first 2 done, however lost Patna in a unstable stage (no clue what caused it...) so will have to take it back. Waiting for china to collapse as they hate me too much.

Barak, I have never tried the unlocked 3000BC or 600AD starts yet I only use the normal starts or at least will continue to until I have completed the UHV goals a few times with each of the Civs (or the ones that can actually be done, Ethiopia, Mongolia and Inca :D ). In the normal 600AD start Patna always has the two religions and Dehli is normally a waste of space. One of my general Rhyes and Fall tactics is to raze the capitals of enemy Civs to reduce their chance of respawning. You take a stability hit everytime you raze but with somce Civs its worth it (like Rome).

Coko when I play Khmer, Patna normally goes around 1700AD or so sometimes through congress sometimes through instability most of my Khmer games are spent languishing in Shakey. I suspect chinese spies are responsible for it. Speaking of that always use spies against the chinese you can steal some techs off them around 1500ad and 1700ad if you start adding espionage points to them as soon as you meet them. Normally about 800 - 900 for the first tech steal and about 1500 for the second.

The unlocked starts only allow for longer loading times from start. It does nothing to change the nature of the game.

I also find that the 600ad start can be far to scripted (especially in Europe). The 3000 start makes for a more interesting experience.

Hrmm Ill give it a blast then and see how I faire. I have to say I prefered to wait and the randomness that was generated by the wait before BtS was launched (and the time to grab a cuppa and a fag).

Edit: Thats the British fag not the North American I might add.

lol, i gathered that.

Ok 2nd Spoiler. A different path. Tried this one 3 times now and although I never took 2 of those goes to the 30% spread required it was definitely going to be doable. Anyway see below if your interested.

Spoiler :
Research Path: Aesthetics, Sailing, Calender, Philosophy, Alphabet, Currency, Exploration, Optics, anything you like after that.

Initial moves: Found Angkor, found Hanoi, Move Ballista Elephants to take Pagan then Patna (Religious capital).

Build order: Forge in Hanoi and Angkor then Baray then Hanoi buidls Shawadaya Paya and Angkor builds library then eventually Wat Prishnouk. Pagan builds Baray then Harbour then granary. Patna builds baray then granary then courthouse. After these build options you have free reign in all cities.

Workers: Improve whatever you can bringing all food and health resources on line as soon as you research calender.

Great People strategy: Make 1 Artist specialist in Angkor when it hits pop 3, 2 when it hits pop 4 and the Bananas are online. Hanoi should have 1 Artists Specialist then 2 when Angkor is close to half way to popping the 2nd Great Artist it should be moved up to 2 specialists. When Angkor has created 2 GA's Hanoi should have finished the Paya and can be used to pop the 3 GA whilst Angkor completes the Wat Prishnouk.

Civics: Hed Rule, Casts System and Organised Religion.

Points to consider: War with indpendants shouldn't be started until you can capture at least two workers building roads above Hanoi (turn 3 or 4) so that you have extra workers that are essential to getting all the Calender based improvements online to hit your pop 10 goals. Patna should max food, Pagan will require mirco management to hit pop 10 by 1430. Mines should always be built in Jungle hills, Windmills on clear hills except the hill to the south east of Angkor which should have a mine and the copper above Hanoi (obviously).

After you have hit goals 1 & 2 you should concentrate on spreading your religion via caravels with missionaries. First target should be Aztecs and Incas. If you get conquerors gift the units or use them in a friendly manner to support your new pals the Aztecs and Incas. Dont take cities from them its not worth it. Spread your religion to them as fast as possible then concentrate on other friendly Civs colonies. Feel free to switch civics to slavery after hitting goals 1 & 2 and be sure to use the whip to get your heavily growing cities tooled up.

Tried it just now.... I hit the population goal 2 turns after 1450 (ARGH!!!!) and missed the culture goal by about 4000 pts!

Man I suck! I hate myself :(

Failure is hardly a sign of sucking, herpies is a sign of sucking or at least sucking badly...anyway moving swiftly along...

It takes a few good failures to win with most of the Civs in Rhyes and fall when you start playing them and if your new in general to Rhyes and fall there will be little tricks and bits of micromanagement you simply havent picked up/worked out yet. Great People creation and management is one of them and is essential for the Khmer. Just experiment a few times yourself and you will eventually do it. The population goal is an average of 10 per city so you can overcompensate for your weaker ones by having Hanoi with a pop of 14 or more (cant mind exactly what it can get up to but think I had it at 16).

Just keep trying you will eventually do it. Just whatever you do dont attempt Ethiopia, the Inca or Mongolia until you have satisifed yourself with a few UHV wins with other Civs. :)

The sad thing is I've been playing Civ4 obsessively for 2 solid years and I still suck...I only have 2 victories....
but the challenge is what keeps me coming back....

I've found it is easier to when going for 2nd artist, and he is halfway through at capital, Hanoi should completely max out on its artist level (should get about 6 or so). This should just about work after you've got your 2nd and mean the 3rd comes quickly, then you just max out food.

I managed to do a sick trick last time, I knew i'd not make it, and china was at war with me, so gave them Pagan in a peace aggreement, meaning I easily made my limit with Hanoi and Patna having my artists. Then it cultured back to me :)

Well I think im ok at Rhyes and Fall but I can only win vanilla Civ 4 on Prince about 50% of the time and even then thats pushing it its probably closer to 25%. Im fine(ish) on Nobel. With older versions of Civ I had no problems playing at Emperor on I, Deity on II and whatever the highest setting was on Civ III (Sid? I cant remember). 4 just scoobies me most of the time and I have read all the strategy guides here and on other sites at least 2 or 3 times. Doesnt make any difference though I still cant beat the thing!!!

Which when it comes right down to it is probably a good thing since it keeps me playing rather than throwing it on the pile of "completed" games.

True, I only play Rhye's because everything else just annoys me, and I keep doing checks on things that only happen in Rhye! I play Prince but don't always win. Used to play a lot of FfHII but waiting for a less beta BtS edition.

Arf same here on FFH. My real dream would be the Warhammer one getting finished along the lines of the FFH mod but its unlikely at best. I wish I could be azzed learning how to mod myself but I simply dont have enough drive. :p
