Kill a Barbarian, get some gold.

It's a real simple idea, really. I, like many of you, play w/raging barbarians. And while it is nice that they help my units gain XP, they can still be a real nuisance sometimes. I've got to have nearly 3 units patrolling outside my cities otherwise I'll suffer from pillaging. (I know I can turn off raging barbs, just stay with me).

What do y'all think about the idea that there could be a (chance of) a 1-3GP reward for killing a barbarian unit? Perhaps the reward could scale based on the barb unit's level. And perhaps the chance of gold being present could be increased with the "Raiders" bonus, thus beefing it up a bit?

Perhaps it could be a custom game option, "Barbarians carry gold"?

This seems like an interesting idea.

For the most part, it makes sense, too. What do barbarians do, afterall? They pillage! They're bound to carry some reward or another. For that matter, Orthus could carry both the axe and, say, 2-300 gold. A kind of bonus reward for the person who slays him.

Nah... The game is already almost easier on Raging barbarians cause of all of the free XP you get.
Shameless plug; You do however get gold from enemies in my upcoming mod cIVRPG (it has another name, but I don't want to reveal it yet) which is played out in the world of Erebus.

But nah, the benefit from barbarians is already good enough. Seriously, all you need to protect your capital is 3 units (which is free even with Pacifism), except when you are under attack by skeletons and lizardmen, when you might need more.

To make Raging Barbs more of a challenge I've given the Barbarian state the Aggressive, Defensive, Magic Resistant, and Raiders traits to make it a little harder. I then copied part of the code used at the death of Hyborem/Basium so that Orthus's death makes them lose all their traits. (I also made Orthus spawn a little latter, and the Axe gives him more strength and movement)

Again, I think it depends a lot on the game speed, map type, difficulty level, number of civs, etc.

I play on a huge map, marathon or epic speed, Monarch or Emperor, with ONLY the default number of AI civs. One or two of those will usually go down, and one may have the BAR trait. I think this scenario will give you a real raging barb challenge.

It is true that defending cities is not that tough, but expanding and protecting your improvements can be a real challenge, especially if the barbs are picking on you.

I like the original poster's suggestion as a toggle in the starting game screen, then you can use that option or not. But, then again, I thought you should get some sort of reward for taking out the Dirge, barrows, ruins, etc. ;)

Perhaps, but then again, the reward of taking out the barrows and ruins is that you stop the harder barbs from pestering you. But I agree, a small reward could be nice. Especially for taking out the Dirge. (But I hope he won't be such a coward in Shadow)

And, how about more of a reward for taking out bad guys like the Four Horsemen and the Avatar?:)

I know you get a mana node for killing at least some of the Horsemen. However, I remember in one game I had the misfortune of killing him ON a mana node. This converted that node to a Spirit-only node and I already had Spirit mana. Yes, I could now get 2 Spirit manas, but it would have been nice to get some gold or maybe some sort of other resource where I killed him - reagents, etc.
