Emperor
"O for a Muse of fire, that would ascend
The brightest heaven of invention,
A kingdom for a stage, princes to act
And monarchs to behold the swelling scene!"
Well met, Friends! "Kingmaker - The Winter of Discontent" is a scenario depicting the prolonged intermittent struggle now known as the Wars of the Roses, a civil war in medieval England. These wars were fought between supporters of two rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet, those of Lancaster and York. The conflict resulted from social and financial troubles that followed the Hundred Years' War, combined with the mental infirmity and weak rule of Henry VI which revived interest in Richard, Duke of York's claim to the throne. This conflict was portrayed in Shakespeare's first Tetralogy of History Plays, "Henry VI," Parts 1, 2, and 3, as well as the masterpiece, "Richard III."

Spoiler Strategic Overview :
Playable Civilizations:
- House of Lancaster
- House of York
- Kingdom of France
- Kingdom of Scotland
- Native Irish
- Native Welsh
Spoiler Player Civs :
The houses of Lancaster and York must raise support of the noble families who hold sway over most of England. The main struggle of the times is between these two houses. However, other nations on the border could considerably influence the outcome of this struggle. The French would like to capture Calais, and perhaps harass the English even further. The Scots have always coveted the cities in northern England. The Irish, and the Welsh too, would love to gain their freedom from English domination.
Due to the feudal manner in which societies were organized, sovereigns were forced to rely on subordinate nobles to raise armies, collect taxes, and keep the peace. Kingmaker implements this dynamic by using Regional Powers (aka City States) or fiefdoms, which must be influenced, bullied, or even conquered, in order to get them to comply with royal instruction.
Spoiler Screenshots :
TLDR;
- Six playable civs: Lancaster, York, France, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales
- Monthly turns, 1440 - 1500 AD, 720 turns max; Timed and Domination victories only
- There are 59 new units, 14 new buildings
- Lancaster and York can use “Diplomatic Intrigue,” aka Diplomatic Marriage, to acquire city states
- Most units available earlier on the tech tree than the standard game
- Research takes longer; constructing buildings and units not so much
- Lancaster and York have much better, more expensive units, but there is a limit to how many can be built. They can purchase mercenaries if more units are needed
Recommended Mods: “Quick Turns” by Krzyzyk, as the AI tends to produce large numbers of units.
