KoS3 - Warmongers

Ok, I'll try to play tomorrow then. Wish you good recovery.

1. kossin - UP!
2. mlinneak - On deck
3. shurdus
4. mjg5591
5. Meerk - Just Played
6. Softnum - skip

Note on my report: I had some time so I was planning on editing the screenshots but my mouse is acting weird and double-triple clicks by itself non-stop so they are unedited as it was unbearable to edit them. I played most of the round with the keyboard to avoid having to reload for things it did (thank god, I did not have to reload).

Turn 0
Micro as suggested.
Spoiler :

Moscow -> Longbow
Start on Currency, due in 7
Gift units to Churchill
Spoiler :

Turn 1
Alex moves stack next to Nothingham, will he attack?
Spoiler :

Turn 2
Alex bombards Nothingham...
Monty merges his stack with Shaka's
Spoiler :

Road to York complete

Turn 3
Alex attacks... no visible casualties on our side. Churchill is going to have a monster Longbow soon...
Spoiler :

Monty moves his units near our borders. I don't like that... We may need a few axes (queue in St-Pete) to deal with pillagers. The Longbows are promoted with Guerilla.
Spoiler :

Whip Rostov Library for max hammers ->Barracks. This allows to reassign tiles with Novgorod
Set slider at 100% to Currency. Due in 3

Turn 4
Attack the wounded Monty units with longbows (success both times).
Slider at 0% ->Currency due this turn, queue Aesthetics - none of its wonders have been built as far as I see.

Turn 5
gpt goes up to +20 at 0%
Moscow back to stagnate - size 9. Dial a worker as I'd like a few more.
A look at London... 3 settled GGs already. He gets a bunch of promos out of the gate!
Spoiler :

Turn 6
It seems we'll get pillaged... ugh.
Spoiler :

Juggle tiles a bit.

Turn 7
Shaka splits his stack leaving hurt HAs in the open? Ok, I pick them off. No pillage occurs.

Turn 8
Start hooking up marble with two workers... ETA: 7 turns ugh... send a 3rd worker (good thing another was just done in Moscow... I actually queue another one)

Turn 9
First WE shows up
Spoiler :

Up research to 30% so Aesthetics comes in next turn so St-Pete can start working on Parthenon
Settle a GS in Moscow (worth quite a lot!)
Spoiler :

Turn 10
Start sending our Medic archer to Nothingham as there's no healer there.
Churchill kills the whole stack without a scratch on his super LB!
Spoiler :

Start Parthenon in St-Pete. Don't chop before Marble is hooked up! (about 3 turns I think).
We can get Literature in 2 turns by going 100% on it. There are 2 workers chopping in Moscow in preparation for TGL/NE (presumably we'll want it).

I suggest we send Churchill after another tech so he doesn't start TGL.

Only Alex/Ottomans have Aesthetics (Sulei has been wonder-whoring a bit - stone?) and Nappy as well (marble? couldn't find it with the GSpy.).
Spoiler :

Demographics - we're doing alright
Spoiler :

Techs
Spoiler :

Only important stack within range:
Spoiler :

Options:
Construction: Colosseums +1 happy, catapults, bridges over rivers (slow moving atm)
Calendar: Churchill has a Banana tile to improve and there's an Incense for another +1 happy up north
CoL: Courthouses aren't grand right now (12 gpt for 720 hammers) but maybe we want to run Caste (not sure, whip is so powerful...) and it cheapens CS.
CS: Obviously.... it's CS!
Meditation/Drama: It's a direct line to Philosophy which could be worth 2 happy/city. Also cheapens the price of Music for perhaps a free Artist.
Metal Casting: Forges and it's needed for later on.

I think I'd go for the Meditation/Drama line. CS isn't that great right now (low commerce in Moscow and little need for chain farming) plus we can always steal the others I think. (infiltrate with Gspy)

Things to consider:
While Courthouses may not be worth the hammer cost right now, Markets would allow us to use 2 merchant specialists in select cities while staying in Slavery.
JC has no Iron as far as I can tell hehe.
Once Trebuchets start coming, it will be a lot harder. We meed good units for when that happens.
Do we settle the last city on the dotmap? Keep/give to Churchill?
EP: I focused our EP on Alex/Sulei as they are closest to us. I don't know how this affects Churchill's EP but I'm pretty sure he'll keep spending like he wants to.
Spoiler :

I would let Churchill keep his gold for now as his upgrades are cheap and we still have Archers to gift him.

Education will be a good tech for the future. Universities are half-price with Philosophical and Stone means Oxford will go up pretty fast in Moscow.

More thoughts later on.

mlinneak is up now with shurdus on deck.

Looks good, kossin :)

I will download the save tonight when I get home from work. I could play tonight, but would prefer to wait until tomorrow only to get addional comments, ideas and feedback from the team beforehand. I will check back tonight :)

Set Metal Casting as a placeholder. Churchill had selected HBR. I tell him to switch to MC with us. If a different tech is preferred please ask Churchill to switch as well to whatever we end up researching.

Our cities:

Moscow - could definitely use a colosseum after the market to increase the happy cap

moscow-1.jpg

St. Petersburg - hired a scientist to slow growth while waiting for whip unhappy to cool - I was very upset about losing the Parthenon here. I saved the trees until after the marble was hooked up and used them all  We still had either 4 or 5 turns left on it when it was secured by someone else - I did not check to see who stole it out from under us. Not sure if there was something I should have done to prevent this loss.

stpetersburg-1.jpg

Novgorod - is unhappy but could whip the colosseum next turn to avoid the penalty

novgorod-1.jpg

Rostov - has a lot of commerce and the market here should do our economy good when it completes

rostov-1.jpg

Marblopolis - not much to say here

marblopolis.jpg

Sheepish - here either - the only reason I selected a barracks was because I had planned to have the city train its own garrison at some point

I am especially frightened by Rome's giant stack of chariots! :scared:

The save ~

Nice set! :goodjob:

Cottages aren't the best use of worker turns right now, there are still trees standing... chop chop!

Don't group workers, we're losing turns like this. I found 4 turns that'd be lost by hitting enter this turn. When in doubt, chop, farm, cottage, mine or road.

Too bad about Parthenon :S It went to Ottomans... Only thing that would have been possible to do is whip as soon as allowed but I'd have to check it even that worked.

Research: I say let's go for Philosophy. Only Monte/Shaka can research it right now so I think our chances are good. It's 2 happy/city and forges right now don't provide a lot of production. In any case, Churchill's super longbow is now Drill IV, CG III and Guerilla II, with a promotion to spare! Moreover, we could run Pacifism and really churn out those GP.
As a side note, Moscow will want the National Epic very very soon.
It will also dissuade AIs from getting it meaning we have a clear path towards Liberalism (-> Steel maybe?).

I guess this means I am up...

I will try to get some more defenses up since the stacks are coming in the numbers, AND they are huge at this point. A few longbows here and there never hurt...

I agree on philo, it should be a nice boost to our economy to get GP out and run a religion. I will try to play tonight.

Thanks! :)

I never am certain when chops are the best - I am usually nervous about using them in case the team wanted to save them for something more significant than the current build I have in queue - like the Parthenon :cringe: or if any should be saved for forest preserves or lumbermills.

I just tried from the last round... Parthenon wasn't going to happen unless there were 3 workers chopping there and a 3-pop whip so don't blame yourself on that. We'll get it... eventually ;)

Preserves are only good if you have a decent National Park spot (we don't unfortunately).
I generally don't like Lumbermills as they take a long time to improve and aren't worth that much production pre-railroad (at which point they're the same as a SP workshop + 0.5 health I guess). They're nice when you have time on your side but we don't have that luxury in Always War I fear.

@Shurdus, yes I forgot the roster again...
A few more longbows won't hurt, that's for sure. Good thing the stacks all move on Nothingham now, it's a lot easier to defend just 1 spot.

Oh and if you have spare hammers, start building Theatres so we can get the Globe Theater before drafting time.

Thanks, theatres will be nice indeed so I will try to strat them.

Sorry for the delay, at the present I just completed my before-last exam. It was a tough one but now I am waiting at school for my fiancé to finish hers. As I mentioned before we moved into a new appartment recently and while everything there like internet is taken care of, we share our internet with other appartments which means that everything runs at a snail pace at night. I will try to play this afternoon so check in in a few hours, it should be there by then if my internet will allow it.

Played my set.

Turn 0
Ungroup all workers, like kossin pointed out, it just wastes worker turns. Also I removed these 'pre-chopped' sings that once had a function but were really pointless now that the forrests were gone.

Turn 1
I move the longbowman from Novgorod to Nottingham. There are quite a few stack heading our way and I want to get more units up there even though it may turn out to be redundant.

Spoiler :
movelongbow0000.jpg
I also get more farms and mines build. Because we lose gold per turn I set research to 0%. We still get philo in 12 turns... Nice. :goodjob:

I note the Great Spy in France. Ploink? What is he doing there? I think maybe settling him could have been worth it, or even a GA in time, but why is he wandering about there? What did I miss?

Turn 2
More worker assignments, a bit of tile swapping, really nothing special. the Collosus is bidl after I hit enter.
Spoiler :
colossusisup0000.jpg

Turn 3
The longbow I send from Novgorod reaches Nottingham. In good time too, because there is quite a stack there. nothing too impressive really, but still. I move the longbow in the city of course.

Spoiler :
stackandlongbowarrive00.jpg

The GSpy peaks at Rome. hello Rome! I have no idea why I did that really, but I did not see why he would wander about. I moved him towards the centre chokepoint after this in order to see stacks coming sooner.

Spoiler :
rometurn30000.jpg

I notice Chruchill has unhealth in Nottingham and York. I gift him our sheep since we have two. York becomes happy after this.

Spoiler :
gifttochurchill0000.jpg

Turn 4
Nothing special. I build a road from Sheepish to St Pete's to facilitate traveling in the future since I saw no obvious other thinges for the workers to do.

Turn 5
A new GS pops. He can bulb Philo. Taoism is not found yet. Of course I feel bad because I should have considered bulbing it all along, the turns on Philo might not have been spent and we may have grabbed CS instead while bulbing Philo.

Spoiler :
newgs0000.jpg

Oh well... At least I can now setle him for long term gain. Here is a screeny showing he will net us 15.75 bpt, which is quite respectable.

Spoiler :
actualreturnsofgs0000.jpg

Turn 6
Our gold reserves now allow us to research Philo in two turns, so I set research back to 100%. Still Taoism is not found yet so I feel confident in grabbing it now.

Turn 7
Woohoo! Philo is in, as is Taoism!

Spoiler :
taoism0000.jpg

I stopped playing here for several reasons. We have to consider what to do with the missionary as of now. We can send it to Churchill but we are and will always be friendly with him anyway. Spreading it to him can wait as far as I am concerned.

We can also use it to get monastaries up in at least Moscow, maybe a few more. We should spread this religion at the very least in order to profit from running a religion in civics and happyness.

I also wanted discussions on what to research next. I did not want to decide for the team by myself.

I also did not want to play on because uploading pics with my crappy connection takes forever and I am now fed up with that. :p

Note that I did not mention every chop I made, nor every worker turn. It seemed to get waaaay tp boring really fast.

One last thing before I leave it to the next one up. Screenies and a discussion of the different cities!

Moscow
Spoiler :
moscow0000.jpg
Not much to say here. I got more mines up. I wanted to have the option to go all out for production should the need arise.

St Pete
Spoiler :
stpete0000.jpg
It could probably stand to lose the cottages in exchange for farms. We can then run more specialists, and we can switch to workshops later on.

Novgorod
Spoiler :
novgorod0000.jpg
Chopped into a colosseum here to battle unhappyness. I also switched tiles to Rostov so I could chop into a market there. This city does well for itseld and the cottages are ncie, yet I feel farms and cottages might have been better. On the other hand we need to get commerce from somewhere and this city is not half bad.

Rostov
Spoiler :
rostov0000.jpg
It could definitely stand to lose cottages. this city is lacking food or grassland and is destined to gp production if you ask me. The cottages do not go well with that but I left them since we have no better destination for the tiles at the present...

Marbopolis
I swapped tiles around to let this city grow. I also added farms and mines here. nce it grows it is a decent production centre but not great. I disliked working the marble as of yet so I mined the hill to the east and worked that instead. I would have liked to upload a pic but my internet refused to do it. :p

Sheepish
Spoiler :
sheepish0000.jpg
This city battles with happyness issues so I decided to get an archer up in order to battle that. After that the city can grow.

Great! Happiness will be very very useful.

Hopefully Taoism will spread by itself quite a bit. Moscow being our best :hammers: city, I'd send the missionary there to start spreading it further. After 1/2 start on the National Epic in Moscow (we'll switch to pacifism later to churn out GPP).

Techs: Monotheism this turn (in 1). 25% production to buildings and the ability to build missionaries should help for now.
Metal Casting after that will give 50% bonus to buildings. I think we should infiltrate relatively soon to steal a few techs. Metal Casting already has some beakers in it so it's not worth stealing.
Let's head down the Lib line after that (CoL-CS-Paper-Edu).

Micro: Sheepish ->scientists work iron and a mine (from Moscow).

There isn't much more to say I think... Churchill is pretty much taking care of the AIs.

Raise happy cap and spread the religion...

The Great Spy was exploring the region and I believe the intent was to eventually infiltrate whichever civ seemed to be the most profitable to do so for tech stealing.

That and give us a lookout for later invasion (easier when you know where cities are).

2. mlinneak
3. shurdus - Just Played
4. mjg5591 - UP?/(skip)
5. Meerk - On deck/(UP)
6. Softnum - (On deck)

mjg hasn't been on the forums for a few days. If he can't pick it up today, he gets a skip until he announces he can play again (let's keep things moving).

So Meerk, you'd be up tomorrow in that case.

At Meerk's request, here's a quick swap:

1. kossin
2. mlinneak
3. shurdus - Just Played
4. mjg5591 (skip)
5. Softnum - UP
6. Meerk - On deck

It's been a little quiet, so I thought I would offer some thoughts about what to do next. Softnum may not have been expecting to be up so soon. If he/she doesn't pick up or comment before this evening, I will unswap and take a turn then.

As I see it, we are planning to wait for a turn to get monotheism, and then revolt to both Taoism/OR. Then crank a few missionaries from Sheepish/Moscow to spread to our cities and one of Churchill's.

Meanwhile, since we have exactly 6 cities, we will need a theater in all of them in order to build the GT. Between missionaries and a theater, I think there will be some chopping required near sheepish (as well as working the 2 mines as Kossin mentioned).

If we have the extra :hammers: we may want to consider spreading the religion to all of Churchill's cities for him. This way he will not be distracted from building units. If we have the extra :hammers: to do so.

We can't religion swap and civic on the same turn (unless GA, Spiritual or CR) so we could revolt to Taoism right away and OR in a few turns.

Churchill has only 3 cities so at most he'd build 2 missionaries. We could spare the hammers I guess but I'd rather get temples/theatres up in our cities before.

Softnum hasn't been active for a few days (28th) so go ahead and pick it up. Hopefully he can get the next set.
