[NFP] Kublai Khan Discussion Thread

The only way these tech/civic boosts will not be useless is if they are controllable, i.e The tech and civic you currently have selected are boosted. Otherwise they are Khmer trash tier.

Edit - Watched the video again. It is random, which means complete rubbish. You are far more likely to get a eureka for something you are would get anyway, or that 1 turn leave tech you left behind 2 eras ago, as you are to get something useful.

We don't even know how it works yet. It could be for every trade route to a new city, or it could include city-states

I wonder what Kublai Khan's unique abilities and how they will synergize with China and Mongolia. Can Kublai Khan's unique ability help China go for domination? Can he help Mongolia go for science and cultural?

As pointed out in the thread before, Kublai seems to get additional yields... maybe from Trading Posts in other Civs?

ooh maybe something like +2 to a few yields for every other major or minor civ in which youve established a trading post, or maybe for every foreign trading post? that'd be cool, and possibly incentivise not always spamming "repeat trade route" to the same few cities

Any guesses for what kind of an Agenda Kublai will have?

Based on previous NFP leaders, he dislikes civs that use trade routes. He and Wilhelmina are going to hate each other. :mischief:

Maybe those who use foreign trade routes? As opposed to domestic ones?

Edit: Menelik's Agenda is annoying. Hills are everywhere.

Probably dislike civs that refused to open border, or the civs that he hasn't send a trade route to.

That's just Wilhelmina with a Mongol accent. Oh, and a gender swap.

If it's every new city that could be a little nuts. Mongolia establishes it's trading post as soon as the route is sent. Send a bunch of routes to different cities in Civ A and get your bonus eurekas/inspirations that turn. Declare war to get your trade routes back. Send them to another civ for more bonus eurekas/inspirations.

I was wondering whether any silly business would happen over Kublai in China, so far, the Chinese translation of the announcement today is completely messed up, as opposed to all of the other versions: https://civilization.com/zh-TW/news...ss-releases-january-2021-dlc-on-january-28th/

Coincidence? I mean, I guess.

The "zh-TW" code in the weblink means it is the Traditional Chinese page for Taiwanese civ players, TW stands for Taiwan. So it has no relationship with PRC.

I can read Chinese and I also didn't see anything in the wording or phrasing that is messed up. It is a correct translation of the English text on the English page, albeit uses the Taiwanese style of Chinese (which is a bit different from Mandarin).

Edit: If you mean the date is messed up - it's about November Update instead of January Update - then Japanese and Korean pages are messed up as well. Guess the whole Asian team of 2k got drunk or something.

It will probably just make China at least a trading civ. They'd want to trade because they'll get bigger boosts too.

He'd definitely help with Mongolia getting caught up with techs and civics. But with the Ortoo ability and stable replacement UB, catching up on technology and certain civics will help with domination.

That seems like the opposite of her.
She wants you to trade with her while he might dislike you for being too far away to trade with.

She also gets upset that you're too far away to trade with. :p Agendas really would make more sense if they were contextual so that Wilhelmina doesn't hate you for being on the other side of the world or Harald doesn't hate you for having no navy despite also having no coastline etc...

If his ability might be called "Silk Road" maybe he'll only like to trade over land and dislike you if his traders have to cross water and be hit by a sudden typhoon. :mischief:

You mean his navy when he tries to conquer you.

I joked about it before but I really kind of want the other part of his ability now to be a penalty for naval combat.

Maybe he won't build harbors, build ships, or trade over the water if he wants to build a "Silk Road"?

If this isn't his agenda now I'm going to be disappointed.

I remember @Mr. Salt having an idea for Kublai Khan. Try checking some of his first posts to see for yourself. He even has that agenda you want. :D Although, I don't think that Agenda is necessary, and would just be a meme.

The one we've seen does have some synergies - with Mongolia, it's good because they get immediate trading posts, so you get the eurekas early. For China, their eurekas are stronger than regular ones, so it does fit with their bonuses too. But if you have to wait for the route to complete, that's a seriously worse bonus for them, since you won't be able to control when the eurekas come, and might run into cases of trade routes breaking before they complete so you don't get any bonus from them.

But again, have to know details. If the bonus is for both civs and city-states, then I think that's good. If it only counts for civs, then hopefully he has more to his abilities.
