Tried my first game at diety last night. Early in the game I was mauled by barbarians real bad. It put me behind and I never had a chance.
The interesting part is I have survived and everyone is in the modern ages. I have 5 cities (lost two others to culural flip). I have 6 spearmen, 4 horsemen, and no navy. I see mechanized infantry go through my borders, battleships bombarding my northern neighbors, and now one of the AIs has built some "weird" thing called the Manhattan project.
I just keep wondering why no one has attacked and put me out of my misery? My cities would be very useful to the Romans as I am quite close to their capital.
I have been trading all my gold for tech, never started a war, never demanded anyone leave my territory, and have always given in to the AI's extortion (the largest demand was about 40 gold).
I use to think the AI was pretty aggresive against the human player, especially if ones army wasn't powerful. Now it looks if you act in a "civil" manner the AI will leave you alone.
