Leader heads make the game crash

My problem is that, whenever I come across another civilization and the leader face pops up, the screen goes black. Usually when I press the windows button I get back to the desktop from where I can continue normally, but sometimes I get a very colourful screen or a perfect silence.

Otherwise the game runs pretty smoothly, but occasionally it crashes for no apparent reason in the middle of the game. Help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running with xp home, service pack II, pentium 4, 3 GHz, Radeon 9800 xt,direct x9 and the 1.52 patch (I suppose, at least the game says there are no more updates)

No one can help without your dxdiag dump as requested above.

(Dxdiag dump - go to Start button - click - select run - type dxdiag - let it chunter away for a min - select save all information button - post it here usind the 'advance' button below)

so it runs pretty good cept it does a random crash.

Try running just the game and nothing else.

start/run

type in: msconfig

Under startup tab disable all.

Under services check the box marked hide all ms services. Make sure you check that box first or bad things could happen. After you have verified that ms services are hidden disable the rest.

Turn off fastwrites, writecombining, vsync.

also: what is the make and model of your monitor.
